

Elizabeth (Betty) Kirkland Moore Monroe of Houston, Texas, passed away on Monday, the 21st of February 2022 at the age of 97. Born on the 5th of March 1924 in Homer, Louisiana, and raised in Fort Worth, Texas; Betty graduated from Paschal High School in 1941. She attended Texas Christian University where she met her husband L.A.J. Monroe. Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Betty supported her husband in his United States Navy service where he served until 1945. She then supported him throughout his successful oil career which took them to live in Shreveport, Louisiana; El Dorado, Arkansas; Kilgore, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; and finally, Houston, Texas.
Betty enjoyed her friends at The Village of Tanglewood where she lived for nine years. She also enjoyed her friends at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, Second Baptist Church, “Make A Lot” investment club, P.E.O.– Chapter AC, numerous bridge groups and as a member for many years of River Oaks Country Club. She was most proud of her association with Texas Christian University where she and L.A.J. established the "L.A.J. and Betty Monroe Endowed Basketball Scholarship."
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, L.A. Jamison Monroe, parents James Kirkland Moore and Julia Bridges Moore, and brother Edgar Hiram Moore. She is survived by her sons Jamison Monroe and his wife, Julie Swanson Monroe; Mark Kirkland Monroe and his wife, Susan Price Monroe; and former daughter-in-law, Kay Monroe, all of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by grandchildren Leslie de la Mora of Houston, Texas; Jamison Monroe, Jr. (Heather) of Nashville, Tennessee; Kirk Monroe (Daniela) of Houston, Texas; Price Monroe (Allison) of Houston, Texas; and Allison Monroe Ellis (Jet) of Abilene, Texas; as well as her great-grandchildren Alexa and Anissa de la Mora of Houston, Texas; Ben and Samuel Monroe of Houston, Texas; Finn and Izzy Monroe of Nashville, Tennessee; and Eloise and George Monroe of Houston, Texas.
The family extends its sincere appreciation to caregivers Lisa Roberson, Wendy Belt, Pam Kirby and Earldine Veal for their continuous help and support.
Following a private entombment service, the memorial service will be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 5th of March, in the Chapel at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home & Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Road in Houston, Texas 77077. The service will be followed by a reception where the family will greet friends.
