Back in the 1970s, Paulette Hall was my neighbour in that lovely spot called Miracle Close.  It was there I met most of the Hall family including mama, Mrs  Esmin Hall.
I liked Mrs Hall from the first time  we met.  
Paulette eventually migrated with Kesna, but as fate would have it Valerie,  Vivette and I all worked at the UWI so I always knew how mama was doing even after she joined Paulette in the US.

Esmin Hall (mama) was a strong woman, a true matriarch full of love and kindness.  I an see her now, smiling with that twinkle in her eye.
Even as she aged, mama was never old.  Valerie reminded me earlier this week that  she never liked old people's clothes.  She really was young at heart and had her grandchildren select her clothes.

Mama was a good person who experienced her own share of grief, but you'd never know that as she walked though life while encouraging and uplifting her children, grandchildren and even strangers.

Valerie told me mama wasn't well in April but I only heard this week that her journey ended in May.

Rest in peace mama - I am glad that our paths crossed.
Deepest sympathy to all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

My  memory  with  Aunte  Esmin has a little girl when she use to come and spend  weekend with her Brother  which is my dad I Remember when she use to put me right beside  her at night and hug me  she would sing to me  miss you Aunte Love you  Marva 

Mama, I still really cannot believe that you are gone. I lived all the way in the Connecticut but I know that you were in Texas available at a moment's notice via a phone call. What amazed me about you is just how much you were always cheerful and upbeat, you had absolutely no time for self-pity.  No matter what was going on in your life you were being encouraging and positive. I wish I could be more like you. I told a security guard lady at work about you and she loved you even though she had never met you. That's the impact you had. You are gone, but never forgotten and I am truly honored that you were my grandmother.

    Memories of Val’s Mom

I have very fun memories of Val’s dear Mother, Esmin and although I did not see her often I know there was a connection and a remembrance one for the other because of the messages that were exchanged.
Of course, I remember well the wonderful bun-  baked with love and much expertise and carefully shared up between myself and Lion Dave etc. Boy will I miss not be able to look forward to receiving and tasting those buns from Mother.  
I also remember with fondness siting with Mother Esmin and her dear Sister (both no longer with us physically) on the front porch of Val’s home enjoying the view and just exchanging thoughts about life. What a joy that was for me. It was made even more special because I felt I was speaking with my own Mother (then deceased) as she shared ‘motherly’ experiences. 
Other memories I have are examples from Mother of how to live life and is based on observing directly and through Val how she took health and healthy lifestyle seriously with a balance of diet and exercise. So important for long life and health life. I will cherish that memory and example and I will try to take a leaf out of her book. I also remember her strong faith in God, evidenced in how she faced a time of painful loss and through her ability to show forgiveness and love despite her own deep sorrow and loss. Also, though how she faced her own health challenge. 
Mother Esmin was a Child of God and a wonderful beloved Mother, a woman of tremendous courage and strength. She is gone but not forgotten. I will treasure her memory. We have the assurance that she is with her Lord. May her soul rest in peace.

I was not privileged to meet Mrs. Hall in person or via social media or YouTube but I met her daughter Valerie. Last April I understand from Valerie that she loves escovish fish and roasted breadfruit and knowing that she was visiting her at that time I sent some for her. Valerie told me she enjoyed them to the very bone.  

In her appreciation for the fish she sent me two lovely shirts; the envy of my colleagues and friends of The University of the West Indies.  

Like mother is her daughter Valerie:  generous, elegant, humble and beautiful.

Being the last child of Mrs Esmin Hall, I am also  honored  to place my words of appreciation in having this wonderful woman in my life.  (Mom, Chups, Sweetie Pie, Mamses) take you pick, but these where just a few of the names I would  greet her with.  Sometimes calling her these many names, would aggravate her,  and sometimes  she would laugh.  "Make up your mind, on which name will it be"  she said one day, "I am getting old and I can't keep up".  I replied " Priceless". 

 We often talk about  life-after-death and what will heaven be like.   In one of these mother-daughter moments she would recall,  when she was  young she use to  spend time with her grandmother who would  wake her up at nights to the hear host of angels in heaven singing. This of course was not an illusion, as Luke 2: 13-14, states: 'And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host (angels) praising God and saying. "Glory to God in the highest...  

Then there was the constant supply of banana bread that was so delicious and  filled with spices, raisins and cherries, but fattening.  Each year would see her starting, Christmas day  singing and dancing to Carla Thomas, 'Gee Whiz its Christmas', and having me and the rest of the family joining in.  Priceless, you really knows how to have fun.

Mama was loved by all. Every one of us was her children. We are still blessed by the prayer she gave when she was here at our house a few years ago.. Prayers and support for the . children :Valerie, Paulette, Anne, Buntin and the sons. Keep comfort in the fact that. Mama is in eternal peace..... Love. Paul and carlene 

Aunt Esmine, you and Uncle Charley took me in at a tender age, 
we lost touch over the years. I was glad to reconnect again,
 and although you had just experienced the most tragic of event, 
you never expressed bitterness, always upbeat when we spoke on the phone. 
As we stood by your bedside, your face frozen in blissful eternal sleep now.
As we  wished you goodbye there seem to be a smile on your brow
A last tearful look as you’re taken away,
There was nothing anyone could do or say,
No words could explain to our  grieving hearts 
Why cruel death had to tear us apart. 
Rest, rest my love  in Eternal Peace,  in His everlasting Arms.


God saw you getting tired when a cure was not to be so he wrapped his arms around you and whispered come to me. 
The memories I have about Mrs Hall will always remain special in my heart, but the one that stands out for me was in 2015 when she went to Jamaica and spent one night at our house in Duncans.  I was pregnant at the time and was so scared and that night she ministered to me and prayed for me and that made a big impact in my situation. She was a wonderful and spiritual woman of God who loves her family and people on a whole,  heaven has gained an angel.   Sleep in perfect peace Mrs Hall , sorry you didn't get to meet my son...

The memory I share is through knowing Viv and Valerie. I can just imagine that Mrs Hall was a warm, kind, sweet person who loved people and gave of her best  to everyone she met.  Mrs Hall must have been a strong lady who raised her children well. All of this is now depicted in her children. You did well Mama Hall. Rest now. Sleep and take your rest. 

Aunt Esmay I will not moan  or morn.!
Because your heaven bound although your gone from this form!
You will be so missed  and I will cry!

 Dear Authea  and Family,

                          Visited with Mom in May, we had such  a good time. Lots of laughter ,Lots of Hugs and Kisses.  Talking about   everything,   from our and her   favorite  foods ,especially , fish soup which she loved.  But, what is memorable, she remembered when  we went to the Rodeo Parade years ago.

                          So happy  we  had the opportunity to see her before she went home.
                           Mom will be missed                 BUT
                           Her memories will live in our hearts , until we see her again.
                            Such a precious lady, who knew and loved The Lord.

 

Mrs. Hall was a loving  person who was blessed with wonderful children and grandchildren of whom she was proud .  I lovingly remember the fried dumplings she made for me.  Wish I could duplicate them.
May her soul rest in peace and light perpetual shine on her.

Remembering my dear Aunt Esmay
She was the keeper of the family registry: no one should be exempt.
She was a larger than life figure
My earliest recollection of her interestingly was at her wedding. I was her prized flower girl and remembers diligently  collecting flowers from neighborhood gardens to make bouquets .
We created a bond that lasted a lifetime.  She was another mother. She cared, sent presents,prayed and had meaningful conversations. I will sorely miss her,

My Aunt created a beautiful home, was a great wife and mother.......a passionate cook,kind, loving and gentle. Her home was filled with laughter, dance and  plenty of food.
She has left behind a clan of loving children,  siblings and a host of families and dearest friends to mourn her passing,
Eternal rest and peace has attended her soul. 

My Aunt Esmin was truly Blessed. 
 I remember Aunt Esmin saying "Miss Mare,  how are you doing?" & "God  Bless you, Miss Mare for taking care of my sister."

I called Aunt Esmin and my Mother, Gwendolyn Smith My Twins.  They were so close, speaking to each other daily by phone.   Eating and drinking the same things, and if not would make adjustments  so they have the same meals.

On some occassions, I would hear them singing and reminiscing about their childhood days and then end their conversations with bursts of laughter.   They talked about the Lord and how He has been so good to them.

Proverbs 31:25-28a says:   Strength and honor are her clothing;   she shall rejoice in time to come.
26.  She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.  27  She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness,  28a  Her children rise up and call her blessed.

TRIBUTE FROM  THE BUCKLE FAMILY

Precious memories, How they linger, How they every flood our soul. Through the Late Dr.Earl Buckle and Valerie Hall Buckle the Buckle and Hall  families became united. We shared one goal, one love and one heart. Both families rely on God who is the Author and Finisher of our Faith. Even now it appalls  the families how God has brought both families together to be so united. 
We shared each other pain and celebrated the happy moments. 
Today, we share the pain of loosing a mother, a friend and a confidante`.  We are just as broken as you are but we rest assured that Mother Hall finds sweet rest in the arms of our Lord and Saviour.
Our sincere prayers are with the family and our wish is that God will continue to soothe your pain and give comfort to you.
Sleep well Mama we will see you in the morning when the mist rolls away.  

Ms. Esmin was like a mother to me.  She was always there to comfort me when I needed her.  She was a  nice woman who was full of wisdom.  She will be missed by many.  She is in a better place now, in peace, and smiling down on all of us.   May her family find comfort and strength during this difficult time.

Aunt Esmay, as she was affectionately called, brings one word to mind. ...LOVE!  The love showed to me by my Aunt can only be compared to that of my mother. 

I can never forget when she took me into her household.  Never mind that she had six children of her own at home and attending school at the time. ....I became number seven. It was to be my final year at attempting the entrance exam for High School.  She knew the consequence of not passing on this final chance.   During my stay, she treated me like her own child, perhaps I even got a little special treatment because I was away from home. 
I will always remember the look on her face when I got home on the evening the exam results came.  She was beaming with joy,  smiles all over her face. ...she was estatic.   I passed!!!

I can't recall ending a conversation with Aunt Esmay without her telling me how much she loved me.  I feel like I have lost my mother all over again.  RIP my beautiful, loving Aunt. 

‘Mama...Oh!’ as I sometimes call you. I don’t even know where to start in honoring your memory but I do know that I could not have ask for a better person to be my mother-in-law. 

The love and care you showered me with can only be compared to nothing less than that of my mother. You treated me like your son and not as a son-in-law. You are always asking if I’m alright or hungry and if I’ve had dinner especially when I come home from work and Bunty is not home yet. That definitely I will miss. Not to talk about the wonderful and famous Mama’s Dumpling that the whole family fight over whenever you will fry them. 

My Mama, My Mother-in-law, My Mother, there is a void in this family that has been created by your passing and it’s a void that will never be filled but your memory and your spirit will forever remain with us all and with that we will take comfort knowing that you are still around helping us to succeed and prosper. 

Rest In Peace now my dear mother knowing that you’ve done all you can for this family and the people you’ve touched along the way on your journey here on earth. 

We will all surely miss you but we know that you are now in the care of the most high God. 


My  prayers and memories  are with the   family  at this time.  your dearly beloved has lived a holistic life  dedicated to God and family. Her legacy lives on through you.

My mother , my love, the earliest memories of my mother was that of unlimited kindness, in my earliest  years  I found it difficult to understand why she shared everything. We lived in a small community and she would send us on errands delivering small packages of produce from her garden or items she though they needed ... no one should go hungry. It was much later in my life that I realized she exhibited all the qualities of the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31. 
Her husband trust her to do him good and not evil.. Kept us clothed by sewing and making us beautiful clothes... self thought,  Provides food would awaken  every morning at 5 am   while it was still night to ensure her husband would have his breakfast and hot lunch which was kept warm in a food thermos ..
She planted a garden  which supplied vegetables and  chicken and eggs from her small farm.She was strong and worked hard and instilled those qualities in her children. She was committed to our education and ensured we had all the help and support to realize our fullest potential.
By example she taught us about God and His love for us  and ensured we understood  the framed bible passage mounted over the front door of our home.... we were to acknowledge God in all our ways and He would direct our paths. Every day she would be singing the songs of Zion while she performed her tasks, she had a voice so sweet. Later it was prayer time and one could hear her as she communed with the Father and His Son.
 Mama I thank God for giving me such a wonderful  woman I call Mama  you have truly fought the good fight so I know the God you serve will reward you  and say as He did Paul .. "well Done"
I miss you but it will be only for a short time as our Hope is in God and His promise We will meet again never again to part.
Your First Born  , you called me Paulette named me  Authea Joy.


Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not envy. It does not boast. It is not proud. It does not dishonor others. It is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered. It keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).

This verse is the embodiment of my grandmother’s life and how she lived each day. She selflessly gave all the love she had to her family and friends and received all this love in return. She prayed tirelessly for her family and friends for them to prosper, their wellbeing, their health and for their safety. She always gave me the encouragement I needed to keep going and was the spirit that bound the family together. I will never forget what you meant to me and the impact you had on my life. Gone but never forgotten. I will love you always.

Remembering my Grandma Esmin Hall – by Tiffoni Buckle McCartney
Esmin May Hall grew up when Jamaica was still a colony of Great Britain. She was born just prior to Jessie Owens dominating the Olympics in Germany and the onset of World War II. She fell in love and got married at twenty two years old to Charles Hall.  By the time she was in her mid-thirties she was the matron of a Hall clan. She was a hard worker and was determined that her children would succeed. She had high expectations for them, and this branched out to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. 
Despite the numerous members of the family she would take the time to acknowledge each person.  She and I talked about how much the world had changed and our family history.  We discussed her great grandfather from Ireland and joked about the pretty young Indian girl that caught his eye. She knew how to tell a story and I valued the time we got to talk about the people that shaped our present.  
Even though she strived for excellence she was sweet. She knew how to enjoy a party when it came time to celebrate. She loved music and could dance up a storm even at her last birthday party.  She knew she was surrounded by people who loved her. 
Let’s celebrate her life as it was fully lived.   May her Spirit continue to live in all of us.


Mama [Mamshe] you are such a selfless human being.  I thank God for choosing  you to be my mother.  You took your children out of Iron’s Mountain and I for one is eternally grateful.  
This will not be strange to you because you heard this from me all the time.  You always think of others first and will sacrifice all to make sure we are well taken care of.
Thank you for the strict home life that you gave me and allowed me to instill that in my children.  
Thanks for taking care of my children who I know cannot find the words to describe how grateful they are to you.  
A good person leaves an inheritance for their children and grand-children [Proverbs 13:22] and Mama you did that.  You always seize the opportunity to tell us about Jesus. 
I could sit here and write a book but, I must end not because I want to but because it is too hard for me to write.
Mama your void is so evident in my home.  You tell it like it is with no reservation and I will surely miss that.
Mama I know you are with Jesus.   [We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.  Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him -- 2 Corinthians 5 :8-9] 

I thank the Lord for the time He gave you to me.

I was truly sorry to hear the news that dear Mother Esmin Hall has passed away.  I know she will be greatly missed by everyone whose life she touched. I pray that the Holy Spirit will comfort and bring you peace in this season. Again, I extend my love, prayers and heartfelt sympathy to

 Med and Carol has lost our dear friend, we surely miss our  long Godly conversations, she is sadly miss and will always be in our thoughts, Esmay has lived that everyone looked up to her and she was highly loved and respected , because of my mom failing health we could not make it to the funeral but we will be there in spirit, we have that blessed assurance that we will meet in the morning one sweet day,  RIP dear friend.

Kindness, empathy, honor, humor and humility are just a few words to encompass my grandmother’s personality. She was a God fearing woman, full of wisdom and strength, whose smile gave me a sense of peace and safety. That smile is just one of the few beautiful qualities that will surely be missed. Her cooking and baking was not to be competed with, neither was her singing and dancing when her favorite song played on the radio. 

Although you are gone, your essence lives on in all the lives you have touched. Rest well “MAMA” from a life well lived.
