On July 16, 1956, a light was born in San Antonio, Texas, that blessed us for 69 years. On April 26, 2026, that light returned home. We honor a life filled with family, laughter, and lasting memories.
Evelyn grew up alongside her beloved brothers, Sherman Arch, Ernest Rogers, Clinton J. Todd Jr., Raymond J. Todd Sr., and M.C. Gunels Jr., as well as her cherished sister, Andrea Faye Maxwell. The bond she shared with her siblings remained an important part of her life and helped shape the loving, resilient, and devoted woman so many came to know and love
On January 1, 1983, Evelyn married the love of her life, Christor Lewis, who preceded her in passing. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, love, compassion, and service to others. After meeting in San Antonio, Texas, they opened not only their hearts but also their home to children, family, friends, and anyone in need of love and encouragement. Their home was a place of warmth, guidance, laughter, and God’s love.
Evelyn and Christor spent many years in Portland, Oregon, before eventually making Houston, Texas their home. Throughout their lives together, God opened many doors for them to minister His Gospel and uplift communities through faith and fellowship. Evelyn faithfully served alongside Christor in ministries including over 20 years as a dedicated member of Gospel Christmas as well as with Disciples in Song, Life Change Church and many other faith-based communities dedicated to serving the Lord.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her mother, Hazel M. Gunels; her brothers, Sherman Arch, Ernest Rogers, Clinton J. Todd Jr., and Raymond J. Todd Sr.; her sons, Sherman Lewis, Jazman Watson; and her grandson, Jaylan Green.
She is survived by her father, M.C. Gunels (Jean), her sister, Andrea Faye Maxwell and her brother M.C. Gunels Jr. (Kathy)
She is also lovingly remembered by her children and grandchildren: Roderick and Rayna Nightingale (Ruby, Kiersten, Chase, and Jameson); Clifton Oliver (Quinton and Kiana); Evette and Marques Patterson (Winston); Joe and Keisha Lewis (Vivian and Envy Devine); Shcotta and Shantell Lewis (JT and Jaden); Mozelle Lewis (Makyilah and Arianna); Nikki Lewis and Adrian Carter (Kapri and Evie); Tenishia and Chris Quillian (Giselle); Isaac Lewis (Sariah); Brianna and Merle.
Evelyn also leaves behind many extended family members, loved ones, and dear friends who will forever cherish the memories, laughter, wisdom, and unconditional love she shared throughout her life.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing Evelyn’s legacy of faith, love, strength, and devotion to family will continue to live on through all who knew and loved her.
Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit will remain forever in our hearts.
