

Francis James Smathers, beloved and cherished, passed away on February 21, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on December 18, 1929, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of Horace and Naomi Smathers. He graduated from Clarion High School. He furthered his education at LeTourneau Tech, later receiving an Associate's degree from Great South West Industrial College.
Francis served his country with honor as a Radio Operator in the Navy on the USS Bradford during the Korean War. He concluded his career as a machinist at WKM, now known as Cooper Industry, where he worked until his retirement.
He was married to his beloved wife, Mary Lou, for 70 years, and together they had five children: Donna, Shirley, Rosemary, Melvin, and Robert. Later in life, he was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Francis was known for his quiet and laid-back demeanor. Every morning he could be seen collecting cans. He enjoyed watching bowling, Red Skeleton, and Roadrunner on TV. He loved listening to music, with songs like "In the Garden" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" holding special meaning to him. He also cherished the moments spent with Mary Lou at Young At Heart, playing cards and dominos.
A devout Christian, Francis was a member of Sugar Creek Baptist Church for 12 years of his life. He most recently was a member of Southview Baptist Church. His family held the utmost importance to him, and he cherished and loved them deeply, ensuring they were provided with security and love. He was a lifelong follower of Christ, leaving behind a legacy of faith and devotion.
Francis is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, his sister, and one of his grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on March 2, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Advantage Funeral and Cremation Services, located at 7010 Chetwood, Houston, TX 77081. The funeral service will take place on March 3, 2026, at 11:00 am, also at Advantage Funeral and Cremation Services. A committal service will follow at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038, at 1:15 pm.
