

Gerald Ross Murphy previously of Houston, currently of Weston Lakes passed away on September 17, 2014. Gerry was born December 24, 1926 in Berkeley, California, moved to the family farm in Table Grove, Illinois during The Depression, and then settled in St. Petersburg, Florida where he graduated from St. Petersburg High School in 1944. He attended Georgia Tech where he played football and appeared in the Orange Bowl against Tulsa in January, 1945. He served in the US Army and was in the World War II invasion force of Japan. He served as a military policeman under General Douglas MacArthur during the occupation of Japan. Upon discharge, he returned to Florida where he graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.
He moved to Houston, Texas in 1950, married Houston native, Mary Louis Rothermel and pursued a career in the mortgage and financial business where he was employed by Realty Mortgage Company and subsequently became a Senior Vice President at Fannin Bank from which he retired.
He was a member of River Oaks Country Club for close to 60 years and Weston Lakes Country Club for 22 years. He was an avid golfer with 4 holes-in-one. He also relished his hunting and fishing days with his sons and close friends.
Gerry is preceded in death by his parents, Francis F. Murphy and Helen Marie Murphy and brother, Francis Carroll Murphy.
He is survived by Penelope, his wife of 36 years, a brother Patrick Murphy and wife Dana of Minden Nevada, 2 sons, Ross R. Murphy and wife Monica of Katy and Kenneth M. Murphy and wife Sue of Bellville, 2 daughters, Helen Christina Short and husband James of Houston and Karen Murphy of Austin along with 10 wonderful grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30pm on Monday the 22nd of September 2014 in the Chapel at Memorial Oaks, I-10 at Eldridge. A reception will follow in the Events Room at Memorial Oaks.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorial contributions be made to a charity of choice.
