Mr. Giam Trung Pham, age 100, of Sugar Land, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, at his home. Born on April 9, 1925, in Hanoi, Vietnam, Mr. Giam Pham was a beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather known for his kindness, resilience, integrity, and love for travel and reading.
Mr. Giam Pham graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris in 1953 before enlisting in the Commissariat de la Marine, in Toulon, France, where he was trained to be a Naval Commissioner with roles in financial administration, supply, and logistics for the French Navy. He joined the South Vietnamese Navy upon his return to South Vietnam in 1956, where he served as the Navy Controller until the fall of Saigon in 1975, with his final rank being Navy Captain. During his time served in the Vietnamese Navy, he was decorated with the distinguished Medal of Gallantry Cross (Huy Chuong Anh Dũng Bội Tinh) for his bravery as he commanded and thwarted a surprise attack launched by the North Vietnamese communists into the Navy headquarters on the eve of the Tet Offensive in 1968 while he was on duty call that night.
During his 10-year stay in Paris, he married the love of his life, Miss Boi-Huyen Nguyen, and together they had 3 children born in Paris and subsequently 3 more children born in Saigon, Vietnam.
After coming to the U.S. with his family in 1975, Mr. Pham first settled in Pensacola, Florida where he worked for a small CPA firm and taught English as a second language to other Vietnamese families. He also advocated for other fellow Vietnamese to help them find gainful employment and adjust to their new life in America. His love and amazing aptitude for language allowed him to speak fluently in French and English and he was also learning Spanish in his spare time. Thanks to his linguistics skills, after he retired at age 60, he became a certified Trilingual Interpreter/Translator and got assignments from the courts and private law firms to help them with litigation involving Vietnamese and French people. He kept working as his excellent health allowed and was proud to be a productive taxpayer well into his 80’s. Besides spending time with his kids and grandkids, Mr. Pham also enjoyed playing mahjong and reading to keep his mind sharp. He served as an example for others to never stop learning at any age.
Mr. Giam Pham is survived by his six children Ngoc-Lan, Ngoc-Mai, Ngoc-Dung, Thuy-Liên, Trung-Hieu, Kim-Thu, their respective spouses, twelve grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Boi-Huyen three years ago.
