

Gladys Story Gladys Washington McClain was born on August 4, 1949, in Chappell Hill, Texas, to the late Mr. Booker T. and Estella Washington. From an early age, Gladys stood out as a bright light—full of promise, strength, and a heart for others. Gladys was the youngest of twelve siblings. She attended C. H. Hogan in Chappell, Texas, and later moved to Houston and graduated from M.C. William High School, where she excelled academically and athletically, laying the foundation for a life of excellence and service.
Gladys married the love of her life, the late Pastor Johnny McClain, Jr, on June 12, 1972. Together they built a home rooted in faith, love, laughter, and legacy. Their bond was a testament to unity, purpose, and a shared devotion to ministry and the community.
Gladys dedicated 27 years of her life to Kroger’s Corporate Office, where she was widely respected for her sharp leadership, creative problem-solving, and unwavering dedication. Her strong work ethic and ability to inspire those around her made her a pillar within the company. Gladys was not just a leader in the title, she was a mentor, a motivator, and a builder of opportunities. Exemplifying excellence in her leadership, she proudly helped provide job opportunities for numerous youths in the community. Gladys opened doors and paved the way for the next generation, while always looking for ways to uplift others.
Beyond her professional achievements, Gladys lived a life of spiritual purpose with love. She served with grace for 29 years as a former First Lady of Greater Star Missionary Baptist Church, mentoring young women and exemplifying a Christ-like Walk. Her leadership inspired others not only through her words, but how she lived; faithfully, joyfully, and selflessly. Gladys was known for cooking meals in “Big Mamma Kitchen” and “Cajun Beans”.
Legacy and Remembrance
Gladys’ life was a tapestry woven with love, joy, faith, and service. She wore many hats throughout her journey, each with grace and purpose. She was a devoted mother, a loving wife, a caring sister, a loyal friend, a faithful mentor, a joyful encourager, a Godmother, and a spiritual guide to many. Her radiant smile could light up any room and her unwavering positivity left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Her life was a living testimony of kindness, integrity, and a deep passion for lifting and inspiring others. She led by example, served with humility, and loved without limits.
Gladys was preceded in death; by her beloved husband, the late Pastor Johnny McClain, Jr.; son, Andre McClain; her cherished parents; sisters, Betty Dain, and Annie Tucker; brothers, Booker T. Washington, Jr., Fred Washington, George Washington, A.W. Washington, and MacArthur Washington; great-grandchildren, Javone McClain and Kia Hudson.
Gladys leaves to celebrate her life and continue her legacy; her beloved children, Reginald McClain (Chaneria), Roshanda McClain, Ron McClain (Damita), Sheila McClain and Don McClain; daughter-in-law, Angelia McClain. One of her greatest joys in life was being lovingly called “Big Momma” by her treasured grandchildren, Jazzlyn Tucker, Destiny (Cortez) Williams, Dynisha McClain, Ferrari Williams, Malia Woodard, Darien Archie, Andre Raynard Gray, Sr, Aaron Wade, Mikeshia Smith, Latoya Smith Harrison, Durlesha Cockrell, Ron Dominique McClain, Thomas Meyers, Jr., and Katisha Houston; and a host of great-grandchildren; her loving siblings, Ollie McDonald, Mattie Houston, Dorthy Boone and Pearl Collins. She also held a special place in her heart for her godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and best friend, Carolyn Bennett; and her cousin, Mary Sherman; and a host of extended family and dear friends.
Gladys’ presence was larger than life. Her smile, words of encouragement, and deep faith will forever echo in the hearts of those she touched. Though we mourn her earthly departure, we rejoice in knowing she is now resting in the arms of the Savior she served so faithfully. Her memory will continue to inspire, uplift, and bless generations to come.
