Gladys Hung (Chou) Shen was born in Nanking, China, in 1947, to parents Chu Yin and Shu-Sheng Chou. In 1970, she graduated from Tunghai University in Taiwan and, shortly after, she moved to the United States. Gladys met her husband, Ihen “Sam” Shen, at Northeast Missouri State University and they married in Quincy, IN, in 1973. The couple lived many places, including Long Beach, CA, before settling in Houston.
Gladys spent most of her professional life in geophysics, working predominantly at TGS-Nopec, Schlumberger, and Geco-Prakla, where she met many of her lifelong friends.
Gladys loved travel and nature (and seeing nature when she traveled), and enjoyed watching independent films and re-runs of “Frasier.” For a while, she dedicated her time to leading the children’s Continuing Christian Education program at Ascension Chinese Mission, where she was a long-time member of the church.
Preceded in death by her younger brother, Jau-Yi “Charlie” Chou, and her father Shu-Sheng, Gladys is survived by a myriad of loving family, including her mother, husband, daughters Celia and Heidi, son-in-law Michael Wang, granddaughter Hannah, sister-in-law Mai-Jern Chou, nephews Tom and David, and niece Stephanie.
The Shen and Chou families thank you for joining us in celebrating Gladys’ life.
