She was born in Kulangsu, China, on December 13, 1933 to Chua Lo Tan and Luy Yu Hee. Gloria was the 6th of 13 children, being the younger of twin girls. In 1939, her family emigrated to the Philippines where she attended elementary school and high school. Gloria received her Associate Degree in Music from Holy Ghost College in 1955 and then came to the United States to study at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College where she received a Bachelor of Music Degree with a major in piano.
Deciding to further her studies in music, Gloria moved to Houston to study at the University of Houston. It was then that she met the love of her life, George Gee. George was leading music at the Chinese Baptist Church and needed a piano accompanist. Gloria applied for the position and the rest is history. She received her Master of Music Degree in organ and music theory in August of 1959 and they were married just a short time later, on September 8, 1959. George and Gloria enjoyed married life for over 54 years until his death in December of 2013.
Gloria taught music for over 35 years in the Houston Independent School District at many schools including Poe Elementary, Woodrow Wilson Elementary, and MacGregor Elementary. She was also actively involved in the music ministry at Chinese Baptist Church for over 65 years, playing the organ and piano. Gloria accompanied the church choir, orchestra, and countless instrumental and vocal solos, often playing the piano during the offertory. She also taught private piano lessons and mentored dozens of young musicians over the years.
Gloria was gifted with many talents including sewing, cross stitching, needlepoint, crocheting, knitting, quilting, origami, painting, and drawing. She learned to cut hair and shared this skill with many who came to her home. Family members would always look forward to her signature dishes: Pigs Feet and Vermicelli Noodles with Vegetables and Chinese Sausage. Gloria would often fold origami hearts and shirts out of 2-dollar bills to give as appreciation gifts to others.
Despite the health challenges of recent years, music continued to be a lifelong comfort and she enjoyed playing the piano at home even as recently as the week before her passing. With the encouragement of her children and grandchildren, she learned how to use her iPad to listen to music, play games and do word puzzles to keep her mind sharp. Gloria would often check her Facebook page to keep up with friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Philip Chua, George Chua, Peter Chua and sisters Esther Yap, Le Kim Kuramitsu and Teresa Lee.
Gloria is survived by her daughters, Alice Liu (Peter) and Zenobia Perry, grandchildren, Kristyn Liu, Austin Liu, Ryan Perry and Jaclyn Perry, brothers Joseph Chua (Lita) and David Chua (Marilyn), sisters Le Ha Ni (Hi Tai), Aurora Cheng (Jose), Mary Jeu (Onne) and Alice Lau (Raymond) and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
One of her greatest joys was being “Ma” to her daughters and “Ama” to her grandchildren. She also loved being Aunt and Great Aunt to many nieces and nephews.
