Gloria Dean Clayton Lake was born November 17, 1936 to Emmett Sr. and Flora Branford Clayton in Houston, TX. She was the youngest of four siblings. She attended Houston area schools and graduated from Phyllis Wheatly High School. She was baptized at an early age at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.
Gloria pursued nursing at Prairie View College. After two years, she was recruited by the US Army. While serving as a Lab Tech, she met and married Sgt. Nathaniel Lake. To this union, three children were born, Wayne Alvin, Darrell Dewitt (Karen), and Romona Diane Lake.
Gloria left Germany and the army after several years to continue pursuing a nursing vocation. She received an associate degree from San Jacinto College which led to her certification as a LVN. She held several nursing positions before retiring from the City of Houston Health Dept. After retirement, she worked at nursing homes. She continued to be a loving caregiver to family and friends. She was a “super nurse” to her last breath instructing nurses for her own care at DeBakey VA Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan, TX.
Gloria moved to Navasota, TX in 2003. As a faithful servant for God, she enjoyed working with the youth and women’s ministries. She encouraged, advised, and shared her wisdom with her children, grandchildren, and anyone who met her. She was loved and respected by many.
In addition to her parents, Gloria was preceded in death by her brothers Dewitt Davis, Emmett Clayton Jr, and sister Frankie Clayton Baker. She leaves to cherish her memory: her children, grandsons Zachary Dewitt Lake and Marcus Ramon White, goddaughter Nicole Branford, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
