Harriet Ann (Herring) Summerville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, the 30th of January 2022, in Houston, at the age of 81. Harriet was born on the 10th of November 1940, to Boyd and Marie Herring in Arp, Texas.
She attended school in nearby New London, and was raised on an oil lease where her father worked. She spent her childhood surrounded by animals, taking care of 16 cats and 4 dogs. Thus began her deep love for animals. As a teenager, her family relocated to Fort Morgan, Colorado, where she forged friendships that continued throughout her lifetime. While in high school, she was a featured baton twirler, thrilling fans during half-time shows.
After high school, Harriet attended The University of Northern Colorado in Greely, Colorado, before entering the workforce as an executive assistant for an oil company in Denver. She met Carson Summerville, the love of her life, at the apartment complex where they both lived in Denver, Colorado. They married in 1966, and they finished Carson’s active duty in the U.S. Air Force. While in New Mexico, she gave birth to her oldest son, Scott in 1969.
The young family returned to civilian life in Denver briefly before relocating to Houston. In Houston, her younger son Brent was born in 1973. Houston became Harriet’s hometown where she raised her family. She was active in the community, volunteering with Northwest Assistance Ministries (where she later served as a Board Member), collecting and distributing Christmas gifts for children who would otherwise go without. She was also active in her church community singing with the choirs at Spring Woods and Klein United Methodist Churches.
Harriet was a big fan of Texas A&M University, Aggie football and especially Reveille (the mascot). Harriet was an avid tennis player, participating in many area and neighborhood leagues over the years. Through tennis and living in Cypresswood (her beloved neighborhood), she made more life-long friendships where they socialized, traveled, and raised families together. Harriet was a proud grandmother known as “Mimi” by her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert Herring. She is survived by her husband, Carson Summerville; her sons and their wives, Scott & Lauren Summerville and Brent & Mary Lou Summerville; her grandsons, Luke Summerville and Andrew Summerville; many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and cousins-in-law; along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and many lifelong friends.
The family is grateful for her caregivers for the loving care they provided over the last several years.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from two o’clock until four o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 10th of February, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
At a later date, the family will gather for a private interment at Houston National Cemetery.
