Hing M. Lim, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on June 9, 2022, at the age of 99. He was born on June 2, 1923, in Toishan, Guangzhou, China, and was the second born of two brothers.
Hing M. Lim came to Houston before 1956 (Not exactly sure when). He worked at his brother’s, Henry, grocery store for several years. A few years later, Hing rented a store to work for himself and wife, Choi, joined him to help. The hours were long but they worked toward a common goal, that of owning their own store. During this time, they also welcomed son, William into the family.
Several years later, Hing and Choi bought land and built their own store on the North Loop (later changed to Kelley Street). Again, the hours were long but they worked hard to save money so they could eventually buy a house in a better neighborhood.
Recently, my brothers and I had dinner together and we were trying to come up with memories. We realized that neither of our parents spoke to us about their previous lives in China. We think because some of those memories were too painful for them. Raymond and I did remember our father reading Chinese stories to us when we were very little, perhaps 2 to 3 years old.
Mostly, we remembered our parents working very hard. If nothing else, they gave us the work ethic. They also gave us a need for balance between family and work. We are grateful to both of our parents for those lessons.
Hing was preceded in death by wife, Choi; oldest son Sammy; brother Henry, sister-in-law, Rose; and nephew, Gary. He is survived by daughter Betty Gaw, granddaughter Erica Belk (Jeremiah), great- grandson Asher, and great-granddaughter, Charlie Tate; granddaughter Megan Maddox (Michael) and great-granddaughter Eleanor (Ellie). He is also survived by sons Raymond Lim and William Lim.
A visitation for Hing will be held Saturday, July 23, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by funeral service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, at Chapel of Eternal Peace, 2454 S Dairy Ashford, Houston, TX 77077.
