Hugh Jackson Barrett, age 75, passed away the morning of Tuesday, the 22nd of March 2016 at home, in Houston, Texas. Hugh was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on the 27th of June 1940. Hugh had a long, successful career in banking, including helping to patent the first ATM and helping to create online banking. His passion for sculpting and art led him to sponsor a southwest art museum in downtown Houston, and his passion for the bayou and the Houston environmental community led to his being the first President of the Bayou Preservation Association.
Hugh was a renaissance man with many talents and a large zest for life. He had an incredible capacity for love, a wonderfully witty, dry sense of humor, a passion for sailing, art and dancing, and an amazing outlook on life. Hugh made the best of his situation, time and time again, adjusting his expectations for life as his health declined. He was and is an example for those who knew and loved him of someone who lived his life to the fullest, and celebrated each day with his family and friends.
Hugh was preceded in death by his mother, Mae Moore Barrett; his father, Lynn Wandell Barrett; and his older brother, Lynn (Pepper) Wandell Barrett, II. He is survived by his beautiful, loving wife of fifty-two years, Glenda Lynn Hamilton Barrett; daughters, Leslie Barrett Roark and husband Sean, and Liz Barrett Crosswell and husband Mark; grandchildren, David and Bryant Roark, and Barrett, Markley, Jackson and Tommy Crosswell; and great-granddaughter, Addison Roark.
We will hold a celebration of Hugh’s life on Saturday, March 26th at 11am at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive, Houston, with a reception there immediately to follow.
