Inez Charles, a woman of deep love, quiet strength, and boundless generosity, passed away at the age of 89. Born on November 15, 1936, in Gasparillo, Trinidad and Tobago, she was the beloved daughter of Edith Andre and Samuel David. The last of six children, she was a cherished matriarch whose life was a living example of selfless love and service to others.
At an early age, Inez married the love of her life, Percy Charles, with whom she shared a devoted marriage of over 50 years. Together they built a strong and loving family and were blessed with four sons: Wayne Charles, Perry Charles, Earl Charles, and Cornel Charles. Family was the center of Inez’s world, and she devoted her life wholeheartedly to nurturing, supporting, and uplifting those she loved.
Inez’s life journey carried her from Trinidad and Tobago to Antigua, then St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and finally to Houston, Texas, where she settled and lived until her passing. No matter where she resided, she created a home filled with warmth, order, and welcome a place where love was not only felt but generously shared.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and neighbor. Inez had a rare gift: she saw the best in people, even in their imperfections. She was generous of heart and spirit, never selfish, always caring, sharing, and giving unconditionally. Those who crossed her path were forever impacted by her kindness, humility, and grace.
Inez deeply cherished connections. She loved talking on the phone with family and friends, staying in touch, sharing stories, offering advice, and making sure everyone felt remembered and cared for. She was also keenly aware of the world around her, staying well informed on current events and political affairs. Inez held strong convictions and was deeply committed to the principles of democracy, equity, and justice for all. A staunch Democrat, she followed the news closely and often kept those around her informed, engaged, and thinking critically about what was happening in the country and the world.
Inez took great pride in her home and kept it immaculate, seeing it as an expression of her love for others. Her home was a refuge-open to family, friends, and even strangers in need. She often welcomed those going through difficult seasons, offering not just shelter, but comfort, encouragement, and hope. Whether through food, clothing, financial help, or simply a listening ear, Inez gave freely and without expectations.
She was a passionate cook and took joy in preparing West Indian dishes, especially roti, and sharing meals with others. Her kitchen was a place of laughter, nourishment, and love. She also had a keen personal style and loved to dress well, carrying herself with quiet elegance and dignity.
A woman of faith, Inez dearly loved her church, The Church of God of Prophecy in Houston, and her church family. Sundays were especially meaningful to her, and her attending church was something she always looked forward to. Her faith guided her life and shaped the way she loved and served others.
Inez also loved to travel, often returning to Trinidad or visiting new places, embracing life with curiosity and joy. She found peace and pride in her backyard garden, where she planted fruit trees, vegetables, herbs, and flowers, tending to them with the same care she gave to her family and home.
Inez is survived by her beloved sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family, as well as her cherished older sister, Sylvia Johnson, who remains the sole surviving sibling. She leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured in years alone, but in lives touched, hearts changed, and love freely given.
She will be deeply missed, but her lessons remain: to love above all else, to give without hesitation, to open your hearts and home to others, and to live a life rooted in kindness, generosity, and grace.
Her life was love in action-and that love will continue to live on through all who were blessed to know her.
