Iris Webb Whitty of Houston, beloved matriarch of our family, entered into heaven on Thursday, the 24th of July 2025. Known to everyone as “Mama”, she lived each day with joy, kindness and a quiet but strong faith. Her long and exceptional life as a mother, grandmother and great grandmother was an extraordinary gift to her family.
Iris was born in Geismer, Louisiana on the 4th of February 1930. She met the love of her life Daniel “Dan” Patrick Whitty III, in elementary school. Iris and Dan were married in Gonzales, LA in 1949 and were inseparable for 62 years before Dan’s passing in 2011.
Shortly after their marriage, Iris, Dan and their oldest daughter moved to Houston in 1953, where they continued to grow their family by having three more children.
Along with her husband Dan, Iris was a founding member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Her volunteer activities included St. Vincent de Paul, the Women’s Club at St. Cecilia, and the Tynewood Garden Club, among others. Iris enjoyed a good bridge game and canasta with close friends for decades.
Iris and Dan spent much of their time in Galveston, Texas, where they were parishioners at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the beach.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Shelley Whitty Haden and Charlie, Denise Whitty Dubow and Craig, Patrick Whitty and Leigh Ann, and Charlotte Whitty Furrow and Roy. She was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Iris was preceded in death by her grandson, Hamilton Whitty Haden, her husband Dan Whitty, and siblings Gwynn Webb Verbois, Bobbye Webb Culmone, and Elsley Webb.
Our family is grateful for the care, kindness and affection of her caregivers Maria Zavala, Melanie Zavala and Theresa Gregory. We cannot thank these three extraordinary individuals enough.
The family will gather for a private funeral service held to honor Iris’s life. The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
