

He was born the 20th of April 1927, in La Habana, Cuba to José María Montes and María Montes Sanchez.
He fled communism in 1968 with only a LSU diploma making Houston home. Raul “Abo” and the love of his life, Graciela Fernandez Montes, worked hard and gave all they could to raise their family with emphasis on family values, education and helping others.
As the patriarch of the Montes family, Raul was known for his humor, overwhelming generosity and welcoming personality. He is deeply missed.
He is preceded by his wife, Graciela “Aba” Fernandez Montes, and his brother, José “Pepe” Montes. He is survived by two sons, Raul R. and wife Madeleine E. Montes and Jorge R. and wife Lourdes H. Montes; grandchildren, Angelique G. Montes Gaumard and husband Kevin C. Gaumard, Adrienne T. Montes and husband Steven D. Liebelt, Jorge R. Montes II, Alejandro M. Montes and Enrique L. Montes; and great grandchild, Isabella L. Gaumard Montes
Mass is to be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 23rd of June at St. Laurence Catholic Church, 3100 Sweetwater Blvd, Sugar Land, Texas 77479.
The family will then gather for a private Rite of Committal.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Casa Juan Diego, serving immigrants, refugees and the poor in Houston, 4818 Rose Street, Houston, Texas 77007.
