James Davis Barber

James Davis Barber, known as Jim to family and friends, passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 after several years of declining health. Jim was 84, and a beloved patriarch of a large family. Jim was the son of the late Hudie Henderson Barber and Ora Vivian Gaines Barber. He was born and raised in Smackover, Arkansas, and later served in the military. It was on leave in New Mexico that he met his wife of 66 years, Jessie Ann Barber. Jim worked for the Postal Service as an electronic technician for most of his career and spent his time outside of work enjoying his family, researching genealogy, and gardening. He could often be found fishing or rock hunting with his children and grandchildren. For the last twenty years Jim could be found taking pictures of their close bunch of friends, known as the Lunch Bunch, who met at their senior citizen gym and ventured out weekly to try new restaurants and enjoy each others company.

Jim is survived by his wife Jessie Ann Barber, his children Daniel and wife Sheila, Sharon and husband Bennie, David and wife DeeDee, Dolores and husband Joe, his grandchildren Charles and wife Melissa, Scott and wife Stephanie, James and wife Judith, Leslie and husband Don, Travis and wife Alana, Ann and husband Jeff, Traci and husband Eric, Jason, Virginia, Bryan, Matthew, Tray and wife Erin, Michelle and husband Mike, Niki and fiancée Eric, and Erica, and great-grandchildren Anisten, Evan, Kerra, Alaina, Luke, Mackinley, Mackayla, J.T., Jennifer, Kate, Heather, Tanner, Jake, Dakota, Alexander, Olivia, Eli, Mia, Kaleo, Zoe, Ashton, Regan and Ella.

He is preceded in death by his parents Hudie and Ora Barber, sister Janie Brazel, brothers Freddie and Carrol Hood, and son James Hudie Barber.

A visitation will be held at Brookside Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, June 16th.

A memorial service will be held at Brookside Funeral Home 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039 at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 17th. A graveside burial will follow.Condolences may be left on James Davis Barber’s online guest book.
