Jane S. Sarabia, 85 years old, was called home to the Lord May 14, 2022. Janie was born November 5, 1936 in San Juan, Texas. She was the daughter of Rebeca and Gilberto de los Santos. As a young girl, Janie attended Catholic school, which contributed to her embracement of the Catholic faith. She was a devout and faithful Catholic all her life.
Later the family moved to Houston where she met Alfredo C. Sarabia her husband of 62 years. The Lord blessed them with three sons and a daughter. The family was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church prior to them moving to their home in Shepherd Park Plaza. Janie and her family became members of St. Rose of Lima Church where she remained a member for 54 years.
She spent her child rearing years busy with her children’s school, sports, dance activities, and volunteering wherever needed at Church, school or the ballfield. Janie participated in many church activities and organizations during this time. She was very proud that she sponsored a family from Cambodia. She loved helping others and set a great example for her children.
Janie was a true social butterfly who never met a stranger and was a loyal friend. She enjoyed being part of a group of friends who played tennis and bowled. Her favorite organization to be member of was the Azalea Social Club where she and Alfredo met lifelong friends. The club held many events including several dances. Dancing was Janie and Alfredo’s favorite thing to do together. They were perfect dance partners and all eyes were on them when they hit the floor.
Her 30-year career at Foley’s/Macy’s was remarkable. She loved her job and loved helping people. Janie developed long time customers and friends due to the way she cared for them. She invest as much time as needed with her customers so they could find the perfect outfit. Janie was blessed to work with many great people and became lifelong friends, some of which called themselves the “Foley-etts”.
After retirement, Janie was able to be more active in her church. She attended Mass and participated with the Rosary group daily. Janie was a member of the Alter Society, Bereavement Group, and The Catholic Daughters. Janie loved the holidays and loved having the family together throughout the years for meals or to play poker. She loved her musicals and plays. She enjoyed spending time with her sisters. Janie loved each one very much and had so much fun with them.
Janie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and daughter. She is loved and will be missed. She will always be in our hearts, which is full of gratitude for her steadfast love for her family. The Lord welcomes home His devout and faithful servant.
Janie is preceded in death by her son, Gilbert Sarabia, grandson, Andrew Sarabia, parents, Rebeca and Gilberto de los Santos and sister, Martha Medellin.
Janie is survived by her husband, Alfredo C. Sarabia, her son, Sonny and his wife Carrie Sarabia, daughter Rebecca Sarabia Neal, and son Dominic Sarabia; grandchildren, Austin and his wife Alena Sarabia, Sara Sarabia, Lauren Sarabia, Emily Neal and Hannah Neal; great grandchildren Luke Sarabia and Elijah Sarabia; sisters, Maria Calvery, Viola Villanueva, Tomasa Quintana, and Paula Gorham (David); as well as numerous brother and sister in laws, nieces, and nephews.
The visitation for Janie is Tuesday, May 24, 2022 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm with a Rosary service starting at 7:00pm at Pat H. Foley & Company, 1200 West 34th Street, Houston, TX 77018. The funeral mass will be held Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at 10:00am at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 3600 Brinkman Street Houston, TX 77018 with a reception immediately following. The committal service will follow at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023 at approximately 1:00pm.
