Janet Elaine Koger was born on August 24, 1961 in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Jim and Dione Montgomery. She grew up in Houston, Texas, and had lots of friends in school. In high school she was on the drill team, and enjoyed the football games, practices, and friendships that resulted from that experience. She went on to attend college at Abilene Christian University, where she met Dan Koger, and got married when she was 19 years old. After marrying, she became a mom to her first-born daughter, Joy Elizabeth, and had two more daughters, Danielle Marie, and Jennifer Dione, thereafter.
After living in different parts of Texas and doing mission work in Japan, the family settled in Miami. She raised her three girls there, and when they were all in elementary school, she went back to college and finished her bachelor’s degree. Her daughters proudly attended her college graduation at Florida International University. She taught for almost 25 years, mostly 5th grade, and mostly at Christian Schools. She loved helping children to know and rely on Jesus, both in her classroom and at her church (Sunset Church of Christ). She co-ran the Leaderettes program at Sunset and did mission work in Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic.
She eventually moved back to Houston to care for her mother, Dione, who passed in 2018. Janet taught at King’s Academy in Houston and developed many strong bonds with the people there. Her illness prevented her from teaching towards the end, but she continued to volunteer in order to see her friends, and of course, the children.
Janet is survived by her father, James Montgomery, and her siblings, Debra, John, David, and Jay. She is also survived by her 3 daughters, Joy, Danielle, and Jennifer, as well as her 5 grandchildren; Jordan, Daisy, Hagan, Parker, and Henry.
