Jeffery E. Daly passed on Friday November 5, 2021, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 71 years old. On July 19, 1950, Thomas E. Daly and Claire Daly Giordano welcomed Jeff into the world in Springfield Massachusetts. Jeff graduated from two high schools Glenbard West Glen in Ellyn, Il and Memorial High School in Houston, Tx. During the summer of 1971 he met the love of his life, Roseanna. Jeff and Roseanna married in February of 1973. About a year later they became parents for the first time to Sean. Jeff was ecstatic about being a dad. Together they gave birth and raised three more children, Julia, Brian, and Rachel. He was the happiest when he was with his family. Jeff was an amazing dad who loved his children greatly, and it’s apparent in the way his children loved him and sought his wisdom and advice.
Career
Jeff always loved tinkering and fixing things- often using his brothers’ toys as spare parts. Even at Auberge he was always busy walking around and tinkering with things to make them better. During university Jeff worked as a car mechanic to pay his way through the University of Houston. Jeff graduated in 1974 with a B.S. Mechanical Engineering degree He went to work with Brown & Root working on oil rig systems for rigs located in the North Sea and Middle East. Along the way Jeff earned his Professional Engineering License (PE). Wanting to spend more time with his family Jeff took on the research and design role at then called Reed Tool Company. His time at Reed Tool Company allowed him to continue to tinker with things and introduced him to the world of patents. During the oil field downturn in the 1980’s Jeff transitioned to a new job where he managed the design and manufacturing of pill counting machines that were used in many of the larger pharmacies. When the oil field resurged Jeff took on several positions within Reed Tool Company. As a staff engineer, he explored and developed new manufacturing and measuring technologies for high volume and precision manufacturing operations. Jeff even managed the international manufacturing project where he was responsible to bring foreign drill bit assembly plants online.
During 1992 - 2003 Jeff transitioned to his favorite role the intellectual property engineer and patent agent. Jeff managed the intellectual property for Drill Bits, Synthetic Diamond Technology (CMT), wired drill pipe, and Rotary Steerable Tools for Reed-Hycalog and Schlumberger prior going to with the Grant Prideco acquisition. Jeff retired from Schlumberger and became the Director of Intellectual Property at Grant Prideco. Jeff had overall patent responsibility in a company known for its “Intellectual Capital”. Jeff created, implemented, and managed an in-house patent system. When National Oilwell Varco (NOV) acquired Grant Prideco he transitioned into the Director of Intellectual Property reporting to the VP of NOV Legal. This role required extensive travel to create synergies among inventors and identify and capture new technologies for NOV. This role also meant he managed Patent prosecution, the corporate Patent system, and IP enforcement for NOV. Jeff retired from NOV after 30 years of service. Before becoming a patent, agent Jeff was an inventor listed on 15 patents. Since becoming a US Patent Agent in 1999 Jeff had the privilege of filing close to 200 patent applications on behalf of several creative inventors. This especially includes ReedHycalog’s patents on the ‘TReX’ series (which has been extensively licensed), the Intelliserv patents, and many others.
