

George Thomas Lyons, Jr., better known as "Jerry" Lyons, a native Houstonian, passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2011. He attended Sam Houston High School and served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Jerry attended the University of Houston, then worked for the City of Houston until 1957 as an inspector. He began working for the United States Postal Service in 1961, retiring in 1988, after 27 years of service. After 8 years of retirement, he began his favorite job as manager of the VFW Post 8790 in 1996, where he held the title of Assistant Quarter Master. Jerry loved the time spent with his fellow veterans and was honored to serve in the Honor Guard.
Jerry loved and enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, George T. Lyons, Sr. and Georgia B. Mixon Lyons; and his beloved brother, Corporal Patrick Arnold Lyons, who was killed in action while serving as a U.S. Marine during the Korean War.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Maria Lyons; his children, John F. Lyons, Sr. and wife Kathryn, Joseph L. Lyons, Sr. and wife Jamie, Patricia Lyons Futcher and husband Jack, George T. Lyons, III and James Patrick Lyons; his brothers, Reginald J. Lyons and Michael E. Lyons; his uncle Reginald Lyons; his 15 grandchildren; his 1 great-granddaughter; as well as 3 nieces, 1 nephew and 7 cousins.
