Joan was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Rice University (Bachelor of Arts in English). She received a Master of Arts in Drama from University of Houston.
Joan’s passion was the theater. She loved Shakespeare and during her lifetime, performed twelve different Shakespearean roles in full-length plays, roles that included Lady Macbeth, Portia, Beatrice, Isabella and Titania. She performed on some of Houston’s finest stages including Main Street Theater, Houston Shakespeare Festival, the Houston Shakespeare Society, as well as the San Pedro Playhouse in San Antonio. Joan also loved classical theater. Her roles included Hecuba (The Trojan Women) and Madame Arcati (Blithe Spirit).
Joan was a teacher for many years and brought her love for literature to Spring Branch high schools and to the Houston Community College. She received “Outstanding Language Arts Teacher Award” (1993) and the Summer Study Scholarship at the University of London from the Institute of International Education and the English-Speaking Union (1989).
Joan was a volunteer for the Medical Center Hospice, the Student Association Program for Students with Alcohol and Drug Addiction, Taping for the Blind, many Christian drama ministries and Rice University.
Joan’s main love, by far, was her family. Nothing made her happier. She listened to dreams, hopes and disappointments and gave her best to empathize, enjoy, encourage, and love.
Joan accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior as a child and always returned to this truth no matter what difficulty she was going through. During the past months of her struggle with pulmonary fibrosis, Joan frequently told her family she was singing “Jesus Loves Me,” and reminded us of Jesus’ love for us.
Joan is survived by son, David Michael Fox II, (Wendy Nelms Fox) grandsons, Luke David Fox, Keith James Fox, and John Clay Fox, and daughter Kathleen Elizabeth Fox Forbes (Bruce David Forbes), and granddaughters Brooke Lauren Forbes and Alexis Grace Forbes. Joan is also survived by beloved cousin, Joy Sell Bonano, who held an important place in Joan’s family since childhood.
A private graveside service will be held March 13th. Friends and family are invited to a “Celebration of Life” on Sunday, March 21st at 4:00 PM at Ouisie’s Table in Houston, one of Joan’s favorites.
