

Joe affectionately known as Smokey Joe or Uncle Butch relocated to Houston with his mother and attended Booker T. Washington High School.
Joe answered the call of duty and proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War where he served with honor and distinction. Following his military service, he returned home and built a life around family, hard work, and service to others. Joe retired from Waltrip High School and remained active in a number of organizations.
Joe met and married Martha Johnson-Chenier. This union created a loving blended family. Joe and Martha were both active members in their church and avid zydeco dancers and bike riders. “A man of deep faith and service, Joe held the esteemed position of Grand Knight in the Knights of Peter Claver at St. Anne de Beaupre, dedicating his time to uplifting others and strengthening his church community.”
On December 15, 2025, Joe received his calling to eternal peace with no more pain and is resting in the arms of Jesus. Joe is now reunited in spirit with his parents; John Henry Blake, Louvenia Grady, Bonus Dad: R.A. Grady; Sisters: Laura Jackson, Estelle Green, Mary Hall, Ruby Richard, Janice Grady-Harris, Barbara Grady-Buckner; Brothers: Kenneth Grady and R.A. Grady, Jr.
Those remaining to cherish his memories are his loving wife: Martha Johnson-Blake, daughter: Colleen Augustine, bonus daughter Christine Chenier; sons: Michael Blake, Jorell Blake, bonus son Michael Chenier (Yolanda) and Kyle. 10 Grandkids, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, located at 5102 Dabney St, Houston, TX 77026, on January 5, 2026, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.
A Celebration of Life will follow at the same venue from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
