Joe was born to William Dewey and Verna Gladys Harvey at Denton, Texas, on September 5, 1933. After graduating from Nocona High School, he was conscripted into the United States Army during the Korean War. What he thought would be a horrible two-year stint ended up being the greatest adventure of his life. He spent 23 years in the US Army, served three years in combat, met his wife, earned awards, drank good beer, lived in Germany, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and other exotic places, then retired at the rank of Sergeant First Class to Houston, Texas to raise his family. Amongst his awards were two Bronze Stars, three Army Commendation Medals (including one for valor), and two Purple Hearts.
On October 18, 1974, he married Chun Bok Yi. Together they had one child, Jack. Joe also cared deeply for his four stepchildren: Young Soon, Mi Soon, Jae Hak, and Jae Ho. His beloved sister Clara Jean preceded him into the heavenly realm, and he is surely glad to see her again.
Although Joe was exposed to much in life that could harden a heart, he maintained an appreciation for life and a warm, kind heart. His friends and family will fondly remember his love of pie and ice cream, and his easy hospitality.
