Late condolences from Germany! 
I will never forget my stay at my wonderful host family (Julia, John and Jim) in 1988/89 as an exchange student in Vail, Co.
I am greatful for the gernousness, openness and love i received so many years ago.
John & Julia, Jim, David and Margaret will always have a place in my heart.

Condolences from an old college friend and fellow golfer. John and I had a coffee when I visited the Houston Art Museum several years ago and it was fun to "catch up." My best to Julia and the family.

I was very deeply saddened to hear of John's passing as he was a good friend that I enjoyed meeting at the Rotary Club of Houston and the After Hours Network.  God bless you John.  We miss you.  Sincerely, Jon King Rotarian and Founder After Hours Netowrk

John was a friend during the years he was growing up here in Toledo. He had a great litlle dog called Pokey that was John's buddy all through Jr high and high school. We were in the same high school fraternity and were confirmed together at The Temple.He visited Toledo on occasion for high school reunions and I last saw him here about 11 years ago. A lovable guy who might be a tad late to his memorial service. Rollie Romanoff.

I have made a donation in John's memory to Avondale House.

John was a unique and interesting man. I'll miss knowing he is here, and we will ever be indebted to his and Julia's generosity with Bob (he enabled Bob to start his law practice by hiring him as general counsel for the Houston Apartment Association)  and Chris - and  Avondale House, which now has a $4.5M facility thanks to John's negotiations to purchase Avondale House years ago which gave the facility its foundation for a fund-raising campaign for the new facility - and to have Julia Reed straighten out our financial life there.  It has been stable now for 20 years but without Julia and John, it would not have survived.  Also, I remember how Julia was one of the few people who was incredibly supportive when I had my major depression back in 1987.  She offered to write me a check for my yearly salary at the Houston Chronicle while I wrote a book.  Of course, I told her no way could I think, much less work, in my terrible state at the time.  I have been healthy and productive since.  I loved them both.  Will See you on the 23rd.

It was in the last century when John joined the Breakfast Club. It was in this century when John became a key member, often speaking to us and always contributing to the discussions using his education, logic, conservative beliefs and humour to make our meetings more enjoyable and memorable. A man never afraid to advocate new ideas, he never lost his youthful enthusiasm when facing challenges. 
 What was, and is the Breakfast Club?
Regardless of it's varied locations, the dates, the attendance, the quality of the coffee and breakfast  it was a mythical place - not created, but formed by the times we lived in and the quality of the people who joined. John, with his ideas, courtesy and gentlemanly behaviour raised the quality of the Club.
He brought loyalty, cordiality, esteem, sympathy, affection, readiness to aid, to help, to stick, and to fight for others if needed.
Now he has joined the Heavenly Breakfast Club where Harry, Billy, Harold and more than 40 other old friends were waiting for him. John will tell them about the Astrodome and the new Joe Palooka. Our great loss will be their gain.
Enjoy the coffee and the warmth of old friendships. We are all coming to join you.

I am so sad to hear that your father died.  You are and continue to be the apple of his eye.  You have been through so much.  My prayers and thoughts are with you.
