He was the son of Elmer R. And June Wetsel. They were a military family. Elmer was a 3 star general and June was an army nurse. John had a sister Rebecca Sawyer who passed away 2025.
He is survived by his wife Joanne, daughter Ashton, stepson Matt Breihan, his wife Crystal and granddaughter Kirby.
He was a graduate of OU and was a kicker on the Sooner’s football team.
He served in the Army in Vietnam, was severely injured suffered a TBI and PTSD and was awarded the Purple Heart among other medals.
He worked for Acme Brick Company for 25 years, retiring to Santa Fe, NM in 2013 to ski and fly fish. He loved his career and all his coworkers.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman & snow skier. One of his fondest memories was an African safari.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
