Johnny Edmund Lee Edwards, 85 years old, was born in Borger, Texas on March 16, 1940 and passed from us on May 17, 2025 in Houston, Texas. He was a working man who loved his family above all else and did whatever he had to do to take care of his family; first, as a kid when he worked to help his mother provide for and take care of his brothers and sisters, then as a husband and father to care for his own family. He was an award-winning body man who often worked two or three side jobs which, sometimes, meant he left his regular job to go home to change and eat a little dinner with his family and then go to work at another shop until the early hours of the morning. He met the love of his life and married Janette Barber on July 3, 1959. He was kind, compassionate, always helping and doing for others, and everyone loved him. He was a protector whose family was his life, especially his girls – from his mother and sisters to his wife and daughters, his nieces, and then his granddaughters, including his granddaughter-in-law, April. He often said he helped her get Jonathan to come around and marry her – we never knew how he thought he played a part in their relationship, but went along with his story because he was proud of helping to get them together.
He was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence “Rocky” Edwards; his father and mother, Barney Edwards and Anne Loraine Layne; his brother, Daniel Edwards; his sisters, Kay Hartis and Patricia Pope; and his son-in-law, Richard McCue.
He is survived, and terribly missed, by his wife of almost 66 years, Janette Edwards; his daughters, Lynda Edwards Sheffield (with husband Steve) and Teresa Edwards McCue; his granddaughters Keeley Chapa (with husband Matthew) and Laura Thomasson; his grandsons Jonathan Sheffield (with wife April) and Kasey Alvarado; his great-grandsons Euan Thomasson and Oliver Sheffield. Johnny is also survived by his brothers, Bill Edwards and Ronny Edwards (with wife Karen) and his sister, Loretta Ritchey; plus numerous other family members including cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many friends, who loved him and will miss him.
We hold a special place in our hearts and are eternally grateful for the amazing caregivers at Avalon Memory Care where Dad had the privilege of living when his dementia progressed to the point that he needed more care than could be provided at home.
A visitation for Johnny will be held Friday, May 23, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039, followed by a graveside from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
