Jose Coronado Gonzales May 14, 1927 - August 8, 2021 Was born in New Braunfels, Texas Veteran of WWII Joe proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1946-1951 Was in the cement business from 1951 until 1982 Started at Parker Brothers and then went to COD Concrete.
Joe was married to Mary Gonzales for 71 years until her death on November 1, 2019. Joe had no hobbies yet had a passion for serving as self-appointed caretaker of the yard and landscaping at Reid Memorial UMC on Fulton St. and when that congregation started to dwindle, he discovered St. Mark’s UMC on Pecore St. in the Heights. Joe and Mary Gonzales and daughter, Linda Laws, joined SMUMC on Easter Sunday 2000 and Joe became the yard man! He took great pride in seeing his handiwork each time he drove to or by the church…which was almost daily. Heaven forbid he should see a fallen branch or a piece of paper blown into the yard by the wind; he’d have to stop and remove the debris. Joe discovered another passion: volunteering at The Food Pantry. He was the Doorman who made sure the people entered in a coordinated fashion in order to be served efficiently. He helped stock the pantry and was also known as the Candy Man by giving each child a piece of candy at every visit.
Joe was a dedicated and loyal member of the church and member of The Tuxis Sunday School class with Clark Martinson as teacher. In 2018 Joe and Mary moved to Katy, Texas and although no longer able to attend church, they were visited by various members including Jim and Dorothy Moffitt who brought communion as often as possible. Joe was preceded in death by wife: Mary Gonzales, daughter-in-law: Jonnie Gonzales, and grandchildren: Corrie E. Gonzales, Jerimey S. Laws, and Laura M. Jasinsky. Joe is survived by his brother: Mauro C.
