Joseph Kallaby left this life, held closely in the arms of his family on Wednesday December 30, 2020 at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

Joseph (Joe) was born in Bagdad, Iraq on October 03, 1936 to Rachel and Haim Kallaby. Joe was President and Principal Engineer of Offshore Structures Inc. which he founded in 1980. Joe majored in structural engineering, earning Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from Oklahoma State University and the University of California at Berkeley. He was a licensed Professional Engineer in Texas, California, and New York. He was D.OE (Diplomate Ocean Engineer) elected by COPNE (Academy of Costal, Ocean, Port and Navigation Engineers) of ASCE.

Joe has extensive structural engineering expertise in the design and certification of offshore platforms and marine structures. He served as an international consultant on platform structures and has written extensively on their design. He wrote the earthquake design code for offshore platforms and developed the “Pushover” procedure for ultimate strength and reserve strength analyses of structures, now a structural analysis procedure used worldwide. It won the coveted ASCE OTC Hall of Fame Award. Joe joined the SEAoT Houston/Gulf Coast chapter in 1992 and served as its President in 1998. He served as the Houston chapter’s state director for more than a decade, and was elected state President in 2003.

In 2010, Joe agreed to chair the newly formed State Conference Committee. Joe was also chairman of the Technical and Code committee, and has served as chairman of several state and chapters committees.

Joe leaves his legacy to be embraced by his wife Halina; adult children Desiree, David, and Joan Kallaby, Anne Kallaby Johnstone and husband Dave Johnstone, and Elizabeth Kasper; grandchildren Jeremy, Brian, Sydney, Mason, Brenden, Lendsey, and Eliot; and one great grandchild Wesley. He had great love for family and music, dancing and socializing with friends and relatives, and living life to its fullest. His continuing quest for knowledge kept him on his toes and allowed him to strive for and attain great achievement. He had a witty sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. His zest for life and charming personality will be missed by friends and relatives alike all over the world.

Dear Halina and family,

We are deeply saddened to hear of Joe’s passing. We here at FloodBreak had a long and wonderful relationship with him, and he was instrumental to us as we took on the world with a crazy innovation (which, thanks to his help, is now worldwide!). Joe was always a supportive teammate - but that didn’t stop him from saying his mind and keeping us straight on the difficult structural engineering we had in front of us! His zest, his enthusiasm and smile, and his friendship will be with us forever, and we will miss him a lot. All of our love to all of you during this difficult time. And God bless you.

I worked with Joe on a number of Gulf of Mexico Deepwater oil & gas development projects when I was with Hess. He was incredibly bright, unwaveringly principled, doggedly pragmatic, and able to help all involved understand complex structural issues with remarkable clarity. And he did all of this with relative ease and a mirthful grin !
He was indeed one-of-kind, and will be sorely missed.
Halina, I am SO sorry for your loss...

I knew Joe for 30 years as a friend and a fellow professional in the offshore industry in which Joe was renown for his participation in technical committees, certification and design of many projects including novel lock gate design.
Joe had a very quit wit and dry sense of humor and was always asking about your interests and achievements and never boasted about his own. Was always humble in this respect and I valued his friendship and advice to the highest degree. He kept on working as long as he could in what was his passion and never faltered. I will always miss his cool and pragmatic way of looking at life.
God Bless and Rest in Peace Joe
