J. Joyce Embrey was born in Texas on February 17, 1929, and was the youngest of five children. She was preceded in death by her parents, T.C. and Inez Butler, as well as her brothers McNeil and T.C. Butler, and sisters Gloria (Butler) Falkenberg and Audre June (Butler) Harvey. She will be forever remembered and cherished by her surviving nieces Sherri Harvey, Aljean Embrey, Cheryl Embrey, and nephew Christopher Harvey.
Joyce lived in Houston for the majority of her life, and it was in Houston where she met the man she married, C. P. Embrey. Their relationship was truly blessed throughout the years, even though they were childless. When her husband’s dream of becoming a new home builder finally materialized, she worked tirelessly by his side. She and C.P. loved animals, and opened up their home and hearts to their beloved dogs and cats. Joyce always had a smile on her face and a cheerful word to help encourage others. She was also a talented song composer and writer throughout her life, in addition to being a devoted and loving wife, daughter, sister, and aunt to her family. When her husband became critically ill, she cared for him until his passing in 2007. After C.P,’s death, she began to work steadfastly for the Lord.
Her greatest work, under her pen name Jewel Leanna Joyce, was a published poem entitled “The Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus”. She had almost completed the next poem on Abraham when she passed away.
Joyce Embrey was an amazing woman, and she always stood ready to help people. Her warmth, generosity, and wonderful sense of humor will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Joyce is also survived by her three cats, Mikey, Wesley, and Precious. These cats, so loved by Joyce, are being taken care of by a loving family member.
Joyce requested a graveside funeral service, which will be held at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas, 77079, on Monday, June 17, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. Reverend Larry Cooke will be officiating.
