Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Maurice Joseph (Bubba) Silver. Joyce is survived by five children: Sam Silver, Jim Silver, Ann Silver (Sheldon Tapley), Richard Silver (Lori Silver) and Tom Silver (Michele Silver). One daughter, Sheila Silver, preceded her in death. Her four grandchildren, Rachel Tapley (Joe Yeager), Peter Tapley, Kyle Silver and Lauren Silver will miss her deeply.
Joyce graduated from Lamar High School and was a graduate of Lindenwood College, St. Charles, Missouri. She always remembered her college years with deep affection. She taught physical education at Jackson Junior High School in Houston before her marriage and full-time career as a mother and manager of a large and hectic household.
An avid gardener and native plant enthusiast, Joyce was often found gardening in her yard. She was a conservationist long before most people ever heard of the word. She was instrumental in urging Bunker Hill Village, her longtime home, to install sidewalks for pedestrians and took great pleasure in seeing people in her neighborhood using them. As a former P.E. teacher, Joyce believed in staying fit and active and loved playing games of all types, particularly with her grandchildren.
With unflagging kindness, she nurtured her children, their many friends, and countless animals. Joyce’s beauty was always evident, in her face and in her spirit. Her warmth, affection and sweetness were a blessing to all who knew her. To enter her home was to feel welcome; few left without sampling a wonderful homemade meal. She was funny, with a dry, gentle wit. We were so lucky to have her.
The Silvers gratefully acknowledge the wonderful people at Houston Hospice.
