

Scott was born in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, on March 21, 1952, to Ann Blanton Spence and Kenneth Lee Spence. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1975 with a degree in Agricultural Economics. Scott was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and a past member of the Falcon Point Country Club, the American Association of Professional Landmen, the Houston Association of Professional Landmen, the Petroleum Landmen’s Association of New Orleans, and the Permian Basin Landmen’s Association.
Scott enjoyed a 45-year career as a Petroleum Landman and Certified Professional Landman (CPL), working for Petroleum Data Systems, Ranger Oil Company, Zilkha Exploration Company, Apache Corporation, Unocal, Tana Exploration Company, and culminating with 17 years at LLOG Exploration Company. He loved his profession for the friendships it fostered and the creative satisfaction he found in shaping deals and agreements.
When not spending time reading or golfing in Katy or pursuing his passion for photography, Scott often spent time at his Playa Vista home in California, enjoying beach days, mountain hikes, or travel adventures with the love of his life and favorite travel companion, Gayle.
Scott was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Lee Spence and Ann Blanton Spence. He is survived by his wife, Gayle Spence; his daughter, Monika Leigh Warren (James Patrick Warren) and granddaughter Evelyn; his son, Erik James Spence (Susanna Spence) and grandchildren Chloe and Evan; and his daughter, Lauren Wood (Conor Izzett) and granddaughter Fiona. He is also survived by his brother, John Spence; sister, Sue Courtney (Ron Courtney); mother-in-law, Lois Demel; numerous nieces and nephews; and an extended circle of loving family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, January 8th, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Church of the Holy Apostles, 1225 West Grand Parkway South, Katy, Texas, 77494. A reception for family and friends will be held at the church immediately following the service. To honor Scott’s memory, floral tributes may be delivered to the church prior to the service or donations may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center at https://gifts.mdanderson.org/ or the Houston Food Bank at www.houstonfoodbank.org or a charity of your choice.
