Kimberly Robin Daylor passed away on Wednesday August 7th, 2024 in Houston, Texas from cancer at the age of 62. Born in Dallas, TX, to Albert Troy Whitener and Martha Lou (Drake) Whitener on June 27, 1962, she graduated from Reagan High School in 1980, attended Sam Houston State University as a Delta Zeta, and Houston Community College Medical. She worked briefly as a firefighter and EMT with Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department and spent ten years as a respiratory therapist at Spring Branch Hospital before meeting her husband, Steve Daylor, and devoting her time to being a stay-at-home mother.
Kim was fun. She was a NASTAR silver medalist snow skier, an accomplished slalom water skier, and held a personal record of twelve consecutive 360’s on the knee board. Kim was also a trier. She left no cards on the table in life. She would frequently seek out new and unusual foods, play board games even if she didn’t know the rules, and was more than willing to put herself into all kinds of situations in the pursuit of fun, a prank, or a story. Her love of fun and of stories also led her to volunteer reading books in her children’s classroom, where she always insisted on bringing the drama and spookiness to Halloween readings, even if it meant possibly scarring some students. No moment was too small or insignificant to produce an opportunity for fun.
Kim also had a strong love of animals. She was a frequent mom to many dogs, whom she loved dearly and cared deeply for regardless of their interest in cuddling. She also felt as strongly for the pets of those around her, especially those of her children. She volunteered extensively at her children’s elementary school, and would bring chinchillas and iguanas to the school through the Cy-Fair ISD Science Resource Center. She was also an accomplished animal impersonator, being preternaturally capable of imitating the call of a howler monkey or the walk of an opossum.
Finally, she loved her family and her friends unconditionally. Kim cherished her friendships, connecting over Words with Friends, sifting through “shabby chic” items together at Round Top, and meeting with both friends and coworkers for dinner. She always looked forward to the yearly Christmas cookie exchange party, and enjoyed playing tennis, mahjong, cooking with family, along with reading faith-based books and participating in book clubs. She was a constant fountain of care, kindness, and support to those in her life. She was always able to prioritize her love for the people around her over anything else. Her support for and love of her children and husband were unending, and it was impossible not to feel how deeply she cared for those around her.
Kim is preceded in death by her parents Martha Lou and Troy Whitener, and her two brothers, Mark Russell Whitener and William Payton Whitener. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Steve Daylor, along with her three children, Ryan Malone, Dr. Emmie Malone, and Victoria Daylor.
