Kyong Hui was born on January 7, 1940, in Seoul, South Korea. She was the 2nd child of 5 born to Chong Soo Dong and Lee Keum Hui. Her family moved to Nampo, North Korea, when she was 2 years old due to her father’s job in construction.
Her family fled from North Korea back to Seoul before the start of the Korean War. Her family settled in the Hong Jae Dong Moon Hwa Cheon region, where she had her formal education and met her husband, Bu Kon Yu. They married on December 9, 1963. After years of infertility, God blessed them with children, Stephanie and Chong Uk.
Kyong Hui, her husband, and children immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1975. Then they relocated to Houston, Texas, in 1976 to be closer to family friends from Korea. Kyong Hui and Bu Kon were proud immigrants living the American dream as small business owners for nearly 50 years.
Kyong Hui is the ultimate Proverbs 31 woman, who lived her life fully with thanksgiving, joy, and, above all, love. She loved everyone she encountered, and everyone she encountered loved her. She truly bears the fruit of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control”. Her faith in Jesus and love for God’s Word grew throughout the years. She served others tirelessly with humility, thinking of others before herself, especially her family and her home church of 40 years.
Kyong Hui is survived by her husband, Bu Kon Yu; her daughter, Stephanie Chon, and son-in-law, Peter Chon; her son, Chong Uk Yu; her grandchildren, Claire Chon, Ethan Chon, Joshua Yu, and Eliana Yu, who called her “Halmoni”.
