

Larry Wayne Powell was born in Houston, Texas, to Eli Richards and Ruby Powell. He attended Mable B. Wesley Elementary School and graduated from M.C. Williams High School. Larry spent his entire life rooted in faith, family, and service.
At a young age, Larry was baptized at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. G. G. Grant. He remained a faithful servant under Pastor Vernon Strahan and later went on to found Delivering and Breakthrough Church. Larry was a man of great faith. As a devoted Christian and Pastor, he ministered to many and shared God’s love wherever he went. His life was a living testimony of his trust in the Lord, and his ministry touched countless lives through his compassion, wisdom, and servant’s heart.
Larry was a proud and loving father. He was blessed with his firstborn daughter, Tina Giles. In 1990, he married Verlean James, and together they were blessed with two sons, Patrick and Derick James. His love for his children and his entire family was unwavering.
Larry was a gentle, kindhearted man who always had a smile and an encouraging word for everyone he met. He was employed with Aldine Independent School District, where he worked faithfully until his retirement, leaving a positive and lasting impact on his colleagues, students, and the community. After retirement, he founded his own business, Powell Delivery Services, where he continued to work until his health began to decline.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eli Richards and Ruby Powell; his grandmother, Essie Bradley; his brothers, Edwin, Roland, and David; his sisters, Minnie Foster, Freda Scott, and Deborah Thornton.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Verlean James Powell; his children, Tina Giles, Patrick James (Kristina), and Derick James; his eight grandchildren; his siblings, Jacqueline Bell (Lonnie), Barbara Petty (John), Patricia Jefferson, Earl Powell (Barbara), Charles Powell, Billy Powell (Linda), Rickey Powell and Steve McCoppy (Jackie); along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, and friends.
Larry will be remembered for his joyful laughter, his hardworking nature, and his deep love for God and family. His presence was a light in every room, and his legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to live on in all who knew him.
