

LaVerne Voelkel Christian was born October 16, 1930 in Hallettsville, Texas. At the age of 93 she went peacefully to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 7th, 2023. She was the middle child and only daughter to Henry E. Voelkel and Esther Hughes Voelkel. LaVerne graduated from Jefferson Davis High School and received her Bachelor of Business Administration from The University of Texas.
After college she married the love of her life, J. E. (Jay) Christian, Jr. and had 2 children, Wendy and Jason. Although she proudly called herself a Texan, due to her husband’s career she lived in many places. She created loving homes in Atlanta, Ga, Marlboro, NJ, Midlothian, Va, Spartanburg, SC and most recently Amelia Island, Fl.
LaVerne will be greatly missed by her daughter Wendy (Rick) Lee, son Jason (Phoebe) Christian and grandchildren, Katherine Abigail Haithcox, Nicholas Alexander Haithcox, Ellie Margaret Christian and Eden Mathis Christian. She was affectionately known as Grams. She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Esther Voelkel, husband Jay Christian, oldest brother, Shelton Henry Voelkel and son-in-law, William (Bill) Nall Haithcox.
LaVerne lived life to the fullest. She loved dancing, Country and Western music and especially Charlie Pride. She loved going to casinos with friends, playing cards, bingo and happy hour. Very little brought her more joy than a good closing day on the stock market. She will forever be remembered for her infectious smile, love of her family and friends and never meeting a stranger.
LaVerne will be laid to rest Monday, November 13, 2023 next to her husband in Brookside Memorial Park Houston Texas.
