January 26, 1923 – March 13, 2021
Lyle Sorum went to be with the Lord on March 13, 2021 at the age of 98. He was blessed with a long and fulfilling life. Born January 26, 1923 in St. Paul, Minnesota, Lyle was the youngest of two children. His father, Bennett O. Sorum was a bookkeeper and his mother, Georgiana, was a housewife.
After attending the University of Minnesota, Lyle enlisted in the Merchant Marines serving on 14 supply ships in WWII from 1943-1945. While docked in Galveston he met his future bride, Lorraine Davidson, as they both waited in line for balcony seating at Houston’s N. Main Movie Theater. They wed at the end of the war and spent the next 70 years together.
Lyle was a God loving, family man who was a charter member, elder, and faithful servant at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Houston. In 1982, he & Lorraine moved to Georgetown, TX where they were active members of Faith Lutheran Church. Lyle retired from Schlumberger in 1986 after 40 years of service as a draftsman and supervisor. He enjoyed playing golf, bowling - where he held bragging rights for a near perfect score of 299, singing in the church choir, and traveling. There was not one place that Lyle visited that he didn’t record in a journal. Detailed accounts of places he stayed, meals he consumed, miles he drove, price of gas, movies he saw and whether he liked them, and the list goes on and on. His first PC was a Tandy computer and he often complained that his documents were “lost in the bowels of the computer.” At the age of 97, Lyle’s mind was still strong. He filled his days reading the newspaper from cover to cover, following online entertainment news, playing computer games and board games, listening to music, and sending emails.
After 23 years in Georgetown, Lyle & Lorraine left the town they loved to move close to family in The Woodlands, TX where they joined The Woodlands United Methodist Church.
Preceded in death by Lorraine, Lyle leaves behind his four beloved children, Laurie Clark; Luanne Lewinski & husband, Tim; Skip Sorum & wife, Cindy; Linda Loukanis Bergmeister & husband, Joe; eleven grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Lyle’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 10 in the Robb Chapel at The Woodlands United Methodist Church located in The Woodlands TX.
Reception to follow at the East Shore Clubhouse at 2662 N. Bay Pl., The Woodlands.
