Mamie worked in various fields for 60 years to include farming, factory work, elevator operator, tax clerk, and a sales clerk for a local non-profit. She finally retired at 75 and spent her next ten years caring for her husband of 64 years. Mamie enjoyed accompanying R.J. on fishing and shopping trips around Houston. Both of them would take the grandchildren shopping and then to a lunch at Catfish Kitchen. She enjoyed many hours with her granddaughter –Kimberly – most often spent watching Hee-Haw and eating Jiffy-Pop on Saturday nights.
Mamie loved gardening and spent hours in her yard. She was very proud of her Lindale Yard of the Month awards. Often, neighbors would stop and compliment her on flowers. Her other joy was her family and she enjoyed cooking supper, holiday feasts for all and making special cakes to celebrate birthdays. Many of her children’s friends were so excited to receive something from Mamie’s kitchen whether it was her famous biscuits, cornbread, fried pies, or desserts. She gave unselfishly of her time and spent hours talking on the phone to a friend or relative in need.
Neighbor, Marion Tamborello was very special to Mamie. She so enjoyed talking with him, even if they didn’t agree, going to AAA restaurant for her weekly breakfast outing, his never ending loyalty to her and her needs. She had a great time keeping their secret of her visit to the Casino. She said quite often, she was lucky to have him so close to her.
Mamie had a special relationship with neighbor, Ricardo Rodriguez who always took time to visit and chat about politics, world issues and family. In addition, neighbors, Sammy and Becky Montalbano were always present for her needs and Sammy was always available if she thought something was not quite right at her house.
The family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers, Miss Rose and Miss Hannah, who took care of her with such care and compassion. For the past two years, mother was in the hands of both of these women whose commitment was always to provide the best and loving care for her. Special thanks to Home Care Assistance and Good Shepherd Hospice who provided excellent health care for our mother.
