Manuel Morales, Jr. (Manny to his friends) was born on May 15, 1958, in El Paso, Texas. Growing up with older siblings who had largely moved out during his formative years, Manny expressed a warm sense of family but also a desire to find a forever family.
Navigating his teenage years was not without its challenges. He came to terms with his identity as a gay man during high school, and the racial integration of schools in El Paso added to the complexities of his adolescence. Choosing to leave school in the eleventh grade, Manny pursued his passion by attending beauty school, a decision that would lead him to a fulfilling career as an independent hair stylist—a profession he cherished until just a month before his passing
Manny’s heart was as big as his talent. He cared deeply for his clients, always going the extra mile to accommodate their needs, whether that meant juggling a busy schedule, working late, or making house calls for those unable to visit him. Even during the last year of his life, filled with aggressive treatments and hospital stays, his primary concern remained his clients, showcasing his selflessness and dedication.
Throughout his life, Manny sought a circle of friends who offered support, trust, and unconditional love. In the days leading up to his death, he expressed deep gratitude for his chosen family, including his beloved first cousin, a testament to the love he so richly deserved.
A cornerstone in his life was his church, Unity of Houston, where he was a proud member of the choir. Manny’s spiritual leaders and dear friends provided the strength and encouragement he needed, reinforcing his faith and encouraging his love of music.
Manny’s faith not only sustained him but also inspired him to share his gift of music with others. He loved to perform and he loved bringing friends together for karaoke. His beautiful tenor voice was a reflection of his unwavering joy and spirit, resonating with all who had the privilege to hear him sing. Joy was not just a feeling for Manny; it was his guiding principle, and he embodied it in every aspect of his life.
Manny Morales, Jr. will be remembered not only for his artistic talents and compassionate heart, but for the friend he was, the boundless love he shared and the joy he radiated.
