Marge “Marge” Gerontakos, age 90, passed on September 30, 2024, while on hospice care in the comfort of home and family. She was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by her three children and their spouses: Mary, Kathleen and Gary, and Joe and Wendy; her six grandchildren and their spouses: Stephanie, Brian and Murat, Michael and Maren, Brianna, Katie, and Courtney; and her great-grandson, Luke. Marge was also cherished by her nephews and nieces—especially Maureen—and many friends and neighbors.
Born on July 29, 1934, Marge was the fourth of five children of Greek immigrant Theodore Kostidinos Gerontakos and Elizabeth (Helen) Manostakos. She was born and grew up on Long Island, New York in Sayville, where she raised her own family and dedicated 35 years of service to the Sayville School District Administration before retiring in 1999 at the age of 65.
After retirement, Marge moved to Sugar Land, Texas to be close to family as she started the next chapter in her life. As the heart of what she proudly referred to as “The Best Family,” she hosted lively Sunday dinners and gathered the family to celebrate holidays. Her Catholic faith was a cornerstone in her life and she regularly attended daily and Sunday masses at St. Laurence, forming close bonds with parishioners and clergy alike. She also made friendships through volunteering, especially at the Holy Family food pantry with Sister Carmen, and participating in activities at Tri-City and, most recently, at her Senior Living community.
Marge often expressed her deep satisfaction with life. She loved spending time with friends and family, going out to eat, and playing games like Canasta and Rummikub. She enjoyed occasional day trips to casinos for slot machines, and occasionally walked away a winner! Her adventurous spirit took her on travels as well, including memorable trips to Alaska, Las Vegas, Europe, Mexico and the Greek Isles—to name a few—which she spoke of often with joy.
Whether known as Margaret, Marge, Ma, Mumsy, Mom, Grammy, or Aunt Margaret, she was a force to be reckoned with, a dedicated friend, mother, grandmother, and aunt. She will be remembered always and missed deeply by those fortunate enough to have shared in her life.
