Margo Dean Mohnke was born on the 26th of June 1951, in Mineral Wells, Texas, to parents Aubrey Herbert and Clara Louise “Tootsie” Mohnke. She graduated from San Marcos High School in 1969 where she was a member of the Royal Guard beginning her love of dance and revealing her fun-loving, spirited personality. As a student at Southwest Texas State University, she joined the elite dance group known as the Strutters and danced her way into the heart of Terry Marshall Womac. They married on the 2nd of September 1972, and after graduation, the newly-weds moved to Houston, Texas where Terry attended law school and Margo managed two jobs to support them. The Womac family grew with the addition of Corbin Marshall in 1979, and in 1980 they joined Second Baptist Church. It was here that Margo prayed to receive Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and began an incredible journey of growth through her faith in the Lord. That faith grew exponentially with the birth of Whitney Dean two years later as she miraculously overcame unanticipated complications at birth.
When her children were young, Margo volunteered for many hours within their community, and in 1990, she found her vocational calling when she began working at Second Baptist. During her 33 years of ministry, she literally did it all! From her first role as a Nursery School Substitute, to multiple assignments at Second Baptist School, to an assistant in the Women’s Ministry, and finally leading the Ministry Network, Missions, and Evangelism Teams on all campuses. Margo used the gifts God had given her to make an eternal difference! Margo built great organizations with thousands of volunteers in programs like Angels of Light, Disaster Relief, Mission Trips, and hosting thousands of international students from China.
Margo had the gift of hospitality, and she beautifully embodied a style that made every person feel heard, loved, appreciated, and successful. As soon as you met her, you knew she could be a friend because she was truly interested in anyone who crossed her path. Never one to be satisfied with small talk, Margo always wanted to know who you were as a person. She was gracious and kind to whomever she met and made you feel welcome with a smile that lit up the room.
Margo was a woman of action, always doing for others, but most importantly, she took care of her family. She was consistently engaged in each of their lives with full knowledge of their needs, events, and accomplishments. She was always present and an encourager with Godly wisdom to share when needed. She cherished her life with Terry for some 51 years as they worked together and played together. They enjoyed traveling and went on many wonderful trips with good friends and family. Her favorite pastime most recently was spending time with her grandchildren and doing what most grandmothers do – spoiling those kids rotten! Coco never missed a dance recital or a sports event, cheering them on to victory and encouraging them to do their best. Margo was selfless to the end, even during her most difficult times.
Margo is preceded in death by her father, her mother, and her brothers, Aubrey, Jr. and Dana Mohnke. She is survived by her beloved husband, Terry; her children, Corbin and his wife, Heather, and Whitney and her husband, Don Arroyo; her grandchildren, Dean, Ava, Olivia, Elise and her sister, Lora Ann Chafin and husband Jeff.
For those of us who had the honor of working with Margo personally, we will be forever blessed for having known her. She challenged all of us to use our gifts for God’s glory and for His Kingdom. We thank the Lord for the privilege of having been loved and touched by this special servant of the King.
