Maureen was born on January 6, 1944 in Jamaica, New York to George C. and Elizabeth F. Ewart Patterson.
After receiving Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from State of New York Potsdam in the mid 1960’s, Maureen devoted her life to the teaching and nurturing of young minds. Most of her career was spent as a Kindergarten teacher at Garden Oaks Elementary in Houston ISD where she fostered the love of reading and kindness to others to generations of students. Her legacy was recognized in June 1989 when she received Houston ISD’s prestigious “Teacher of the Year” award. Unfortunately, Maureen had to retire early from her beloved profession in June 2002 due to health issues.
To 3 generations of nieces and nephews, Maureen was “Aunt of the Year” every year since 1960. Her patience and calm demeanor drew children to her as well as her willingness (and amazing flexibility) to get down on the floor and play.
Maureen spent the next 22 years of retirement happily in Houston shopping for bargains (she gave the best gifts), crafting, and eating dinner out every night with a very small but close knit group of friends.
In January 2024, her loving family “kidnapped” her due to failing health and relocated her to the Heart of the Family in North Central Texas.
Maureen was preceded in death by her parents, George and Elizabeth Patterson; brother, George Patterson; and sister Betty Nosovitch.
Maureen is survived by nephew, Dr. John Nosovitch (Julia); niece, Janice Nielsen (Jim); nephew, Jimmy Patterson (Haley); niece, Beth Henderson (Joel); and sister-in-law, Margaret Patterson. In addition, Maureen leaves behind 5 great nephews, 1 great niece, 2 great - grandnephews, and 1 great - grandniece as well as loving friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Maureen’s name to the American Heart Association.
