Merton Allen Watts, 80, passed away peacefully May 29, 2021 in Cypress, Texas. He was born in Katy, Texas to Eva M. Watts (Bartlett) and Merton E. Watts. After graduating from Katy High School, Merton attended Texas A&M University and served honorably in the Texas Army National Guard. After serving his term, he began his twenty-five year career in the busy oilfield services industry. Once retired, Merton fully transitioned into his second career of being “grandpa”. In addition to being extremely involved with his two grandkids, he served as a mentor to many at risk students in the Katy and Cy-Fair ISD school districts. Christmas time was his special time of the year! For over two decades, he would put on the red suit, white gloves, velvet hat and black boots to welcome thousands of children in his role as Santa.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Betty Jo Watts; daughter Kim Birkelbach and her husband Darren of Boston, MA; son Kendall Watts and his wife Jennifer of Montgomery, TX; two grandchildren Madelyn Birkelbach and Travis Watts; brother Bill Watts and his wife Denise of Brandon, Fl; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service is being planned and will be held at a later date. The family would like to offer a special thanks to the angels at Cypress Pointe Health and Wellness Center and Vantage Hospice Care who made sure his transition from this life was handled with dignity, true caring and love. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the charity of your choice.
