Mike was born in Denison, Texas and was the only child of John Henry (JH) and Juanita McCurley. His family moved to Houston soon after his birth. He grew up in Denver Harbor, later moving to Oak Forest where he attended Reagan High School. After high school, he attended Trinity University for a brief time before becoming a member of Asbestos Workers Local #22 (aka Insulators Local #22).
In February of 1965, he married the love of his life, Cecile Sparks. They were married until her death in April of 2015. Together they raised three children.
Mike enjoyed fast cars in his younger years, and once married and raising a family he traded that for a safer hobby of raising beagles and “piddling”, as he liked to call it, in his garage. As he got older, Mike enjoyed a round of golf, reading, and making sure he didn’t fall behind on the latest in sports. If you ever talked to him, he would make sure before you went you were caught up on the latest news. As a Houstonian all of his life, he was a devout sports fan. He was thrilled to see the Astros win the World Series in 2017. He was definitely the Rocket’s number one fan, never missing a game.
As a member of Asbestos Workers Local #22, he worked in many interesting places. The one he spoke most fondly of was the Johnson Space Center during the late 60’s and early 70’s. He was proud to have been a part of the Apollo era and told many stories of his time working there. Later, he worked in HVAC for Walgreen’s in the Houston area, always ensuring each store was operating at the right temperature. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in the Heights and served on the vestry for many years.
Mike is preceded in his death by his wife of 50 years, Cecile Sparks McCurley. He is survived by his three children. His daughter, Michele and her husband Joey Gabriel. His oldest son, Scott McCurley, and his youngest son, Steven and his wife Britney McCurley. He was the proud grandfather of three special grandchildren, Grace Gabriel, Hunter and Brooke McCurley. He never missed a chance to share how much he loved them and was confident each of them would succeed in life.
The family is eternally grateful to the ICU staff at North Cypress Hospital and his doctors for his amazing care.
A memorial service will be planned in the near future.
