

Mildred Joyce Claybar Johnson went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, June, 1st. Joyce was born on May 15, 1928 in Orange, Texas to Fleda and Anthony Claybar. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years. She had one sister, Lenore, who preceded her in death as well.
Joyce attended Lamar University and the Hotel Du School of Nursing, where she received her RN certification. She served her residency at John Sealy Hospital and later worked at Methodist Hospital.
Joyce met and married Richard Jay Johnson of New Orleans in (November/December) of 1955 in Houston, and they later made their home in New Orleans before settling down in Houston in 1966. Joyce was an active member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, where she especially enjoyed working in the Mother’s Day Out program and singing in the choir. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Junior League. Joyce was an energetic, vivacious lady who was deeply devoted to her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her beloved grandchildren. She loved entertaining and was a great conversationalist, having never met a stranger.
Joyce leaves behind to mourn her passing son Paul Richard Johnson and wife Lee Ann and their daughter Laura Ann, son Douglas Hays Johnson, Allison L Johnson and their sons Douglas Hays, Jr. and Roger Jay, and daughter Emily Johnson, as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
The family would especially like to thank the staff of Heartland at Royal Oaks and Altus Hospice, for their compassionate care over the years.
A memorial service celebrating Joyce’s life will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, on Saturday, June 6th, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Jim McPhail of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church officiating. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so make a contribution in Joyce’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
