Millicent was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1935, the only child of Richard and Dorothy Mason. The family made their home in Bellaire, Texas. Millicent graduated from Lamar High School and went on to one year of college at the University of Texas.
While having lunch on Main Street in Houston her best friend in high school, Marilyn, introduced her to Jack Paul Westerfield (deceased 2011). They married in 1956 and settled in southwest Houston where they raised 3 children; Rick, Paula, and Melanie.
A homemaker primarily, she also worked off and on for years with her husband in his CPA firm as a receptionist and office manager; the only person who could convince him to computerize his business.
For some years she volunteered at University of Houston, teaching foreign students better conversational English.
She loved, loved old movies. She read a great deal. She subcontracted any and all need for physical exertion. She preferred strict climate control over “fresh air”. She disdained the out-of-doors. You get the idea.
She a) Put on her makeup, and b) Took a mid-day nap. Every. Single. Day.
She could serve you a heckuva chicken fried steak. Ultimately, she reached a saturation point with cooking, summoned the family and announced, “that’s it”, and swore she was putting vending machines in the kitchen.
In 1977 after much soul-searching, she decided to stop drinking alcohol. With the help of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and the wonderful AA community she stayed sober until her passing. She always said that it was going to her regular meetings and interacting with the AA community that truly fed her soul. She was very proud of her sobriety and sponsored many “Pigeons” over the years.
Millicent had a strong presence. When she was in the room you knew it. To quote a dear friend, “Millicent was loved by so many and feared by the rest!”
We feel her absence now. She will be missed.
Millicent was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Jack Paul Westerfield. She is survived by her children, Richard Westerfield (Dasha) of Houston, Paula Westerfield (Valerie) of Arvada, CO, Melanie Westerfield Cizik (Greg) of Houston, and grandchildren Jennifer Westerfield Palmer (Don), Julian Westerfield, Skyleah Westerfield, Reilly Cizik, McKenzie Cizik Bunting (Thomas) and Cameron Cizik.
The family invites friends and family to celebrate Millicent’s life at a memorial service on Sunday, September 15, 2024 at 2:00pm at the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Delta Club of Alcoholics Anonymous or the charity of your choice.
