Myriam “Mimi” Horrocks, 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 25, 2021. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Myriam is survived by daughters Ivonne (Pablo) Villagra, Arlene (Steven) Seltzer, grandchildren Jorge San Juan Jr., Ivette (Quint) Koehn, Brandon (Kellie) Seltzer, Britney (Jared) Dubin, Mia Lafont, Santi Lafont, and great grandchildren Brody Seltzer, Lyla Dubin, and Mason Koehn. She was preceded in death by her husband Max Horrocks and son Manuel “Manny” V. Lafont Jr.
Myriam was born on December 17, 1933 in Havana, Cuba to Isaura Villate and Rene Manresa. She married Manuel “Coco” Lafont and daughters Ivonne and Arlene shortly followed. She loved Cuba but immigrated to the United States in 1962 with her young family, fleeing the rise of the Castro regime. Although times were tough in America at the beginning, she always worked hard to support her family. As the years went by, she became more acclimated to life as an American and embraced her new heritage, eventually welcoming Manny into the world in 1967 as a first generation American. However, Myriam never forgot Cuba.
She held various jobs throughout her life including at Continental Airlines where she developed a deep love for traveling, but her most admired role was being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Myriam met Max Horrocks in December 1994, and the two married, and were blessed with 21 years together. They traveled the world together and enjoyed spending time with their close friends. Myriam and Max were very involved in Westbury Church of Christ, where she was a member of the Elders group and loved attending all the school’s activities, especially the baseball, football, and basketball games.
Myriam was a stoic woman, at times quiet, but always strong. She never lost her joy for life, her passion for playing dominos with friends, or love for her family. She was often at her best in her kitchen, where she loved to cook and entertain. She would often invite people over to her house to gather and enjoy her food, especially traditional Cuban cuisine. Her peach cobbler was loved by all, and when served after a delicious meal of Cuban food, perhaps best symbolized her love for both her Cuban and American heritage.
She was very loved and will be missed by so many.
