Nancy graduated from Uniontown High School and then went to Waynesburg University, a Presbyterian college, majoring in Psychology. She and all of her immediate family moved to Houston, Texas in 1950. In 1951 while working downtown for an insurance company in the Esperson Building, she met the love of her life, Robert J. Logan, originally from Ft. Madison, Iowa. On February 15, 1951, exactly two months and four days later, they were married in the Chapel of Second Presbyterian Church in downtown Houston and remained together for 53 years. Nancy and Bob were inseparable and enjoyed antiquing, playing bridge, traveling, and the occasional pulling of a slot machine.
While growing up in Uniontown, Nancy took voice and piano lessons. She sang in the church choir, was the lead in several high school musicals, and was an entertainer in local USO clubs. A trained and gifted lyric soprano, Nancy was offered a position with the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera but chose to move with her family to Houston instead. She continued to sing in the church choir and became the music leader of her daughter Carol’s Girl Scout troop. Nancy was adventurous and in 1949 she secretly enrolled in the United States Naval Reserve (Women’s Reserve) known as the WAVES but when her mother found out, Nancy was quickly un-enrolled and ultimately returned to college. She volunteered for many years at Rosewood General Hospital where she became President of the Auxiliary. Nancy worked at Clarewood House, which allowed her to use her special gift of interacting with the elderly. She also worked as a travel agent and acted as tour director for many trips to places, such as England, Hawaii, Branson, New England, and Nashville. In her eighties, she became quite good at playing Bridge and Texas Hold ‘em on her computer. Nancy was known to enjoy an occasional libation. Her favorites were the champagnes recommended by her “favorite” son-in-law, Bear Dalton, and his special homemade margaritas. She was always an animal lover but especially loved her many cats over the years.
Nancy was predeceased by her husband, Bob. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Carol Logan Dalton and her husband Charles M. Bear Dalton, her brother Franklin R. Smith and his wife Vera of Newport Beach, California, grandchildren Chip Dalton and his wife Ann, John Dalton, and Abby, her cat.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am in the Founders’ Chapel of Grace Presbyterian Church, 10221 Ella Lee Ln., Houston, Texas 77042, with a Celebration of Nancy’s life to follow in the Parish Hall of Epiphany Episcopal Church, 9600 S. Gessner Rd., Houston, Texas 77071.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Nancy’s name be directed to any animal rescue organization of one’s choice, Grace Presbyterian Church, Houston Hospice, Holly Hall Retirement Community, or any charitable organization of one’s choice.
