Nick Schrakamp, CPA, age 83, of Houston, Texas passed away suddenly on Tuesday, the 1st of August 2017. Nick was born on the 8th of November 1933, in Beaumont, Texas, and married the love of his life, Martha Smart, in 1963. He was an amazing father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. We will always remember his contagious smile, friendly demeanor, kind voice, and charming dimples.
Nick had a wonderful aura about him, never meeting a stranger. You could sit down with Nick for hours and hear incredible stories about his life with his late wife Martha, his children and grandchildren, U of H football, tax information, World War II history, his world travels and so many other things. Usually, however, he focused on the person he was talking to - he was always interested in you and how you were doing.
Nick, referred to as “Gramps” by his grandchildren, loved his family and was very proud of all his children and grandchildren. They meant the world to him. He would do anything for his family and was always there to offer his advice and support. He loved to attend his grandchildren’s school events and to travel with the entire family.
Nick’s circle extended far beyond family. He had many friends, from a lifetime of social and professional activity. He graduated from the University of Houston (with a B.S. in Economics) where he served as the Social Chair of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He was a loyal alum of both UH and Sigma Chi until his death, actively supporting both institutions. He loved to attend UH football games and alum events, and Sigma Chi alum events, where he often ran into old friends. He was an active member of Eighth Church of Christ, Scientist for over 40 years. He served on many boards over the years and also performed a great deal of pro bono work for innumerable church and nonprofit groups. His military service included serving as a Colonel in the Texas State Guard.
He was well known as a CPA in the Houston area and operated his own accounting firm for almost 50 years, working full time until his death. He truly loved his work and many of his clients became close friends.
He is survived by daughter Susan Schrakamp White, sons and daughters-in-law Scott and Lisa Schrakamp and Steve and Diane Schrakamp, and grandchildren Alison and Jack White and Alan and Hayley Schrakamp, as well as siblings Mollie Barton, Ann Philpot, Sue Wills, Ronald, Glen and Benjamin Wills. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Martha Smart Schrakamp, brother Ted Schrakamp and sisters Marguerite Franovich and Carolyne McCants.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from four o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Sunday, the 6th of August, in the parlor and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The interment service will be conducted at ten o’clock in morning on Monday, the 7th of August, at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.
A Celebration of Life is to be conducted at half-past eleven o’clock in the morning on Monday, the 7th of August, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons. Immediately following, all are invited to join the family during a reception to be held in the adjacent grand foyer.
