Norma Jean Hedges, 93, passed away peacefully on the 18th of May 2014 in Houston, Texas. She was born on the 13th of November 13, in Brumley, Missouri, a daughter of Roy B. Hawkins and Sue (Jones) Hawkins. She was married to Walter Perry Hedges on the 27th of September 1940 in Fulton, Missouri.
A graduate of Iberia Junior College at the age of 16, Norma was a teacher in Iberia, Brumley, and the lake area for16 years. Alongside her husband, Walter, Norma also helped to build the Hedges Funeral Homes, established in 1941. With funeral homes in Iberia, Brumley, Crocker, Waynesville, Stoutland, Richland, Meta, Camdenton, Macks Creek and Osage Beach, they made Camdenton their home since 1960.
Her care for families as they went through the grieving process and attention to the community’s needs lives on through Tim and Joy Scott, who continue the legacy of their family-owned business as Hedges- Scott Funeral Homes in Camdenton, Osage Beach and Macks Creek.
Outside of her important role in the Hedges Funeral Homes, she was a Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church of Camdenton and an active volunteer at the Lamb House, Make-A-Wish Foundation and at the Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach.
We rejoice because we know she has gone home to be with the Lord, and joins her husband, Walter P. Hedges, and her daughter, Christy E. Hedges McGeough, and that she is no longer experiencing the pain and suffering that marked her last months here.
Survivors include her sister Maudine “Dean” Edwards (Tuscumbia, Missouri); her daughter D'Ann Hellstern (Dallas, Texas); her daughter Suzy Heine and husband Jon (Houston, Texas); and three grandchildren Melissa Hellstern, (Chicago, Illinois) Ryan Heine,(Houston, Texas), Kimberly Heine Nettles, and husband, Charlie (Houston, Texas) and a great-grandchild Charles Mays Nettles, born just two months before she passed.
In addition to her husband Walter and daughter Christy, Norma was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Reber Hawkins.
